Privacy-first Bitcoin tax software. Runs locally on Mac & Windows. Zero data collection. Pay once, own it forever. Built for Bitcoiners who self-custody.
Australians will self-custody their Bitcoin in a hardware wallet inside a Faraday bag inside a safe... then hand their full transaction history to Koinly. 🤔
There's finally an alternative. @SovereignTax just launched in Australia 🇦🇺
@kit_sats@BenHarner3 This is exactly why we built it. No accounts, no cloud, no surprises at tax time. Thanks for the kind words Ben — @kit_sats let me know if you have any questions.
The IRS just quietly saved crypto investors from a massive tax headache by issuing Notice 2026-20.
This is the most important update you haven't heard of yet, which is applicable to the 2026 tax year.
Let me explain. 🧵
Sovereign Tax v1.4.4 🚀
You can now choose exactly which Bitcoin purchases move when you transfer between wallets — not just oldest first.
Full provenance tracking across multi-hop chains (exchange → cold storage → exchange → sale). Your cost basis stays accurate at every step.
Available now for macOS, Windows & Linux.
🟩Sovereign Tax v1.4.2 is here.
🟩In-app encrypted backups you can restore in one click.
🟩Split short-term/long-term carryforward matching

Thanks for the detailed feedback — you're right. Transfers currently re-tag lots in FIFO order, so you don't get to pick which lots move to cold storage. We're going to add a lot picker to the transfer assignment flow so you can choose which specific lots to move, just like you can with Specific ID on sales. That's coming in the next update.
In the meantime, we just shipped a fix that lets cross-wallet Specific ID elections carry through to the Tax Report correctly — so if you use the "Show lots from all wallets" toggle in Edit Lots, you can reach back and grab the lot you want at sell time. Not as clean as picking at transfer time, but it works as a workaround until we get the transfer lot picker out.
Thanks for the feedback!
On cross-wallet lot selection: When you transfer BTC between your own wallets, go to Transactions → find the Transfer In row → click "Assign" to set the source wallet. This re-tags your lots from the source wallet to the destination, so they're available for Specific ID when you sell from the exchange. There's also a "Show lots from all wallets" toggle in Edit Lots if you need to select lots across wallets directly.
Note: HIFO was removed in v1.3.3 as it's not an IRS-permitted method — only FIFO and Specific ID are allowed per IRS rules. Specific ID gives you full control over which lots to use for each sale.
On holdings export: Great idea — we'll add that to the roadmap.
Sovereign Tax tracks cost basis at the lot level (each individual acquisition), not the UTXO level. When you consolidate UTXOs, that's recorded as a self-transfer — the original purchase dates, prices, and cost bases for each acquisition are preserved. When you later sell, the engine correctly selects from those individual lots (FIFO or Specific ID) to calculate your gain/loss. It doesn't matter how many times the sats were moved or consolidated on-chain — the tax history follows the lots, not the UTXOs.
For many Australians, the first interaction with Bitcoin is simple: open an account, buy a small amount, and hold.
The tax implications usually come later...
Seems @SovereignTaxBTC can help 💸👀

DCA shouldn’t become a tax penalty. ⚖️
If you bought daily/weekly for years, we’ll help you clean lot history and get to accurate cost basis fast.

“DCA Hell” is real 😵💫
If you bought BTC daily for years, tax season can become a nightmare:
• hundreds/thousands of lots 📊
• broken cost basis 🧩
• FIFO mistakes ⚠️
• overpaying tax by accident 💸
Really appreciate this, especially coming from someone who's been advising on Bitcoin tax since 2013. The privacy-first, local processing approach felt like a non-negotiable from day one, so it's validating to hear it resonates with practitioners.
The point about website wording is taken seriously. I'd genuinely welcome your eyes on it, what you flag as technically incorrect or overstated is exactly the kind of feedback I need from someone with your background. Happy to DM if easier.
