Son père est petit fonctionnaire. Sa mère est couturière. Ils ont sept enfants. Il lit tout ce qu'il trouve. En 1931, il obtient une bourse. Il prend le bateau pour la France. Il a 18 ans. Il entre au lycée Louis-le-Grand.

Là, il rencontre un étudiant sénégalais. Ils deviennent inséparables. Avec un Guyanais, ils fondent un journal : L'Étudiant noir. Dans le premier numéro, il invente un mot.

Négritude.

En 1939, il publie un long poème chez un éditeur inconnu. Le Cahier d'un retour au pays natal. Deux ans plus tard, un homme traverse la Martinique en guerre. Il achète la revue par hasard. Il lit. Il est bouleversé. Il s'appelle André Breton. Il écrira la préface qui changera tout.

Le 17 avril 2008, Aimé Césaire s'éteint à Fort-de-France, à 94 ans. Il aura été maire 56 ans, député 48 ans, sans interruption. Un record absolu dans l'histoire parlementaire française.

Stephanie St. Clair, the "Queen of Harlem" born 1897 in Martinique 🇲🇶, was a prominent Black businesswoman who ran numerous enterprises in Harlem, NY, from 1912-1940.
Notorious for mocking the Mafia, Madam St Clair even had the police scared. She would often take out ads just to threaten the mafia and the police on their payroll.
Queen also used her wealth to help Black people through activism and education, assisting with financing businesses and helping Black people buy homes.
