There is no record whatsoever of systematic persecution of Islam in Japan, while Japanese history is instead notorious for the brutal suppression of Christianity and Christians, carried out deliberately, violently, and over centuries. From the early Tokugawa period, Christianity was viewed as a political and security threat. The Bakufu feared that Christian missions could empower the tozama daimyo and undermine shogunal authority. As a result, Christianity was officially banned in 1613, and in 1614 all foreign missionaries were ordered expelled. This policy was far harsher than Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s earlier edict of 1587, which had not even been fully enforced. The repression quickly escalated into open terror. In 1622, the Great Martyrdom of Nagasaki, thirty Christians were beheaded and twenty-five burned alive, including nine foreign priests. This was not an isolated incident but part of a systematic campaign to eradicate Christianity. The climax came with the Amakusa Shimabara Revolt (1637–1638), in which around 37,000 peasants and Christian samurai resisted Tokugawa forces. After the fall of Hara Castle, nearly all rebels were slaughtered, with barely a hundred survivors. This event effectively marked the end of overt Christianity in Japan until the Meiji era. Alongside religious persecution, Japan enforced extreme isolation (sakoku) to eliminate foreign influence. From 1635, Japanese were forbidden to travel abroad, and returnees faced the death penalty. In 1639, all foreigners were confined to Deshima, a man-made island in Nagasaki Bay. Spaniards and Portuguese explicitly associated with Christianity were expelled entirely. One Portuguese ship that attempted to reopen trade was burned, and its entire crew executed. Christianity was outlawed, monitored through religious inquisitions (shūmon aratame), and hunted relentlessly through anti-Christian edicts (kinkyōrei). The Tokugawa state was obsessively paranoid about dissent. Daimyo families were held hostage in Edo under the sankin-kōtai system, religious institutions were tightly regulated, and Christian belief itself was treated as treason. The goal was explicit: eradicate Christianity as a competing loyalty, whether religious or political. By contrast, Islam never posed a political, missionary, or demographic presence in Japan during this period, and therefore was never subjected to anything resembling these policies. No bans, no mass executions, no inquisitions, no martyrdoms nothing. So the historical record is unambiguous: Japan did not persecute Islam. Japan did persecute Christianity systematically, violently, and mercilessly. Anyone claiming otherwise is not debating history. They are exposing their ignorance of it.
