This is an important outcome.
Anna Stec and the team at uclan have carried out this independent research in a very thorough and objective way.
The research has taken a number of years of painstaking and meticulous work.
The Executive Council commissioned the work because, frankly, no one else was going to.
This is work which should have been commissioned by the employer or perhaps, because the hazards are universal by the government.
The research is an important step forward for the union and members and will assist greatly in our campaigning.
It is vital that the government use this information, and if necessary, further research to establish the health effects of the fire on survivors and residents in the surrounding areas.
When firefighters are sent out in crews of just three in a fire engine, lives are put at risk.
The fragmentation of the fire and rescue service has led to a dangerous post-code lottery for firefighter crews.
To protect firefighters and the public, we need national standards.

A lot of work by officials and members in Oxfordshire to get this work progressed - working with the service through committees (joint H&S, JCC) lobbying of councillors and making the case for improved facilities on stations.
Pleased to see this get the go ahead at bus RDS station.

It's so important that the union keeps on top of developments on all matters relevant to the fire sector.
This recently released report, which has been held back since 2022 (a scandal in itself) provides the academic and scientific arguments concerning a major risk which has long been recognised by all of us in the fire sector and beyond.
As with tower blocks, the risk of major and catastrophic fire development and spread can exist soon after construction if the buildings are not built and protected adequately.
But during their lifetime all such buildings are vulnerable to serious fires following initial ignition if the building is changed without adequate safeguarding.
This is a hugely important report. Members will remember the fires in such buildings for example the Fair Isle Bird Sanctuary Fire in 2019 and the Moorfield Hotel fire in Brae in 2021.
In 2020 a housing association had to evacuate 858 residents from Notting Hill Genesis block because the modular construction was so poor.
In 2023, in Croydon in South London modular construction has been used for Europe's tallest building at 163m. Under construction and due to open quite imminently in West London is the 106m Enclave: Acton.
Bear in mind that in comparison that Grenfell Tower was just a little over 67.3m
Vital that the FBU engages with this issue.
The English Devolution White Paper proposes:
- Mayors will by default take responsibility for Fire and Rescue Services where boundaries align with PCCs.
- Exploring Mayors overseeing multiple Fire and Rescue Authorities across wider areas.
We must ensure firefighter voices are heard in these discussions.
