I'm finally reading Dune. This quote, which is in the first few pages, hits hard:
"Once men turned their thinking over to machines in the hope that this would set them free. But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them."
what leads to VAIRĀGYA (dispassion)?
Ketu is treated as its primary signifier. This is correct. Yet the picture is larger.
CANDRA (Moon)
Moon is an unexpected contributor. She signifies rāga (attachment, longing, emotional investment).
An afflicted kṣīṇa-Candra or a Candra in Kemadruma can produce a particular form of vairāgya.
The mind withdraws from a world that no longer nourishes it.
Ketu's detachment is dry illumination. Candra's is grief-soaked dispassion.
ŚUKRA (Venus)
In its sāttvika expression, Śukra can also produce vairāgya.
This is the renunciation born of completion.
The connoisseur has tasted everything and finds nothing left to pursue.
Bhoga ripens into tyāga.
Satiation leads to renunciation.
GURU (Jupiter)
Guru produces vairāgya through knowledge.
Ignorance is burned away.
The transient nature of existence is seen clearly.
This is the dispassion of jñāna-mārga.
ŚANI (Saturn)
The commonly cited Śani-vairāgya is the asceticism of deprivation.
Śani governs saṃyama, tapas, fasting, the bare floor, the worn cloth, the discipline of restraint.
A deeper Śani-vairāgya emerges through disillusionment.
Śani is kāla, time itself.
It watches every form age, every achievement fade, every attachment loosen.
Its dispassion arises from seeing what time eventually does to all things.
The śāstra distinguishes between apara-vairāgya and para-vairāgya.
Guru's is the higher kind.
It is grounded in tattva-jñāna and survives the return of pleasant objects because its root is in seeing.
Candra's grief and Śukra's satiation belong to the lower kind.
Both can reverse the moment the world begins to nourish or tempt again.
Ketu's severance and Śani's attrition occupy the middle.
Both incline toward the higher because they weaken the tendency toward re-attachment.
Yet Ketu can collapse into dissociation.
Śani can collapse into viṣāda.
Guru decides the durability of every carrier.
- Ketu without Guru is escapism.
- Candra without Guru is depression.
- Śukra without Guru is jadedness.
- Śani without Guru is nihilism.
Wherever apara-vairāgya is to ripen into para-vairāgya, Guru is the graha that ripens it.
Jai Dwārikādhīśa.
Somewhere there is a poster who knows everything in advance and predicts the future with 100% accuracy. Like Borges' Library of Babel, he is the one poster from whose posts all of reality could be decoded.
He has less than 50 followers and nothing he writes ever gets a like.
A man who reads old books cannot be fully captured by modern stupidity. He has dead kings, prophets, poets, killers, saints, drunks, generals, and madmen whispering in his bloodstream. The feed has no chance against this.
