Why Speaking Email chose voice commands instead of attempting a "conversational interface" - What’s wrong with Alexa: Former insider on the challenges facing Amazon’s AI voice assistant https://t.co/OCb4Epx0tE via @GeekWire
Our new version out now on google play and the App Store includes some fixes for android speech engine bugs and better handling of permissions prompts on both platforms.
Over the last few months we have added a couple of new voice commands…
The "resume" command plays from the email you were last on
The "incoming" command takes you to the "waiting for incoming mail" screen
If you are using Android look out for a buggy update from Google which causes the speech recognition to cut off immediately.
If this happens it is easy to fix. Go into system settings > apps. Look for “Speech Services by Google”. Uninstall the update.
Now you can use the pause button on Bluetooth headsets to activate voice commands anywhere in the app (iOS only). For example when dictating a reply you can say “send” or “delete sentence”. This is great for blind users or when exercising or driving.

At the request of a visually impaired user, we now read out phone numbers in full by default except within email signatures. There is a new option to skip phone numbers if you want.
Our language detection was getting confused between Chinese and Japanese. They share many of the same characters - so we had to make our language detection a bit smarter!
