I witnessed something very similar in 2003, when I was driving Karen to Hinton for an ultrasound.

Saw a big motorhome dragging a Jeep with no wheels in the east bound lane.

I crossed the ditch and caught up with it. I had a hard time getting the old geezer to stop. He was just looking straight ahead, oblivious to everything behind him.

When I finally got him to stop, and he saw the carnage, he said "It has been a good trip until now"

Later that day, on my way back home, I was able to reconstruct where he started dragging the jeep. 47 km before the spot where I stopped him

When you're towing something, check you mirrors frequently.
