Police Dismiss Claims Mossel Bay Teen Was Killed for Speaking Tsonga

Western Cape police have dismissed claims circulating on social media that 19-year-old Nhlamulo Sambo was murdered because he spoke Tsonga in a predominantly Xhosa-speaking community or that his death was linked to anti-illegal immigration protests in Mossel Bay.

According to police, preliminary investigations indicate that Sambo was allegedly attacked after breaking into a shack and stealing property. Authorities said there is currently no evidence linking the incident to tribal tensions, xenophobia, or recent anti-migrant demonstrations.

Sambo's death sparked widespread debate online after family members and activists alleged that he had been mistaken for a foreign national because he spoke Xitsonga. However, police have urged the public not to speculate while the investigation continues.

No arrests have yet been confirmed, and the exact circumstances surrounding the fatal stabbing remain under investigation.
