Institutions are deeply attuned to “inheriting” colonial objects and BUYING cultural representation. This has established a lineage of non-consent and/or artists needing to other themselves and others for payment. This form of cultural dominance ends now.
Artists have a historical relationship with institutional support (aka the wealthy) that has yet to shift beyond the hierarchies established in medieval times with the church and the state.
YOU CANNOT BUY REPRESENTATION. If there is one thing museums should be doing right now, it’s examining the ways in which they acquire wealth, power, and artwork and their metrics for ongoing financial and overall support of living artists. #changethemusuem
