Steven Herrmann is a writer and analyst member of the C.G. Jung Institute of San Francisco where he teaches in the Institute’s analytic training program.
Words of praise from Murray Stein:
"Dear Steven, Your poems speak straight from the heart, something quite unusual among Jungian authors. I was especially moved by the poem about Don Sandner’s death. What a deeply heartfelt tribute to a true Master!"

I couldn't ask for a lovelier Easter present than the following review I received this morning on Amazon Books from Rev. Dr. Matthew Fox: "Eckhart, Jung, and the Future of Spirituality Christian, Post-Christian & Ecumenical":

I always like to return to read Emily at Easter time because she thought and wrote so much about it. Dickinson wrote in “Love is like Life―” that “Love is the Fellow of the Resurrection / Scooping up death and chanting ‘Live’!” (J 491/F 287)

The Cambridge Jungian Circle presents “Meister Eckhart, C.G. Jung, and the Holy Grail” by Jungian psychoanalyst Steven Herrmann, Ph.D. (Ep. 151):
The greatest Dominican preacher, Meister Eckhart was the son of a nobleman and knight who lived in the land of Thüringia between 1260-1328. Eckhart grew up near the Thüringen forest and, like C.G. Jung, Eckhart read the most celebrated poem of his day by the time he turned 15, Wolfram von Eschenbach’s Parzival.
We will explore the intriguing question of whether Meister Eckhart, through his theology, recovered something akin to the Holy Grail for medieval Europe—and whether, some six centuries later, Jung accomplished a similar task for psychology. Both thinkers were deeply influenced by the legend of the Grail Quest. In this presentation, we will journey into the mystery of the Grail and consider how Eckhart’s thought shaped Jung’s conception of the Self and his understanding of the birth of Christ within the psyche. At the same time, we will examine where their views diverge, particularly in relation to the role of the #shadow, the tension between perfection and wholeness, and their differing perspectives on sexuality, the #anima, the nature of God and the God-image, Christ, and the problem of evil.
Steven Herrmann, Ph.D., MFT, is a Jungian analyst, poet, and author of the book Meister Eckhart and C.G. Jung: On the Vocation of the Self (2024). He is also the author of numerous books on the subjects of Jungian psychology and Native American shamanism. Steven teaches in the analytic training program of the C.G. Jung Institute of San Francisco, California, and he has a private practice Oakland, where he sees patients in his office in Montclair. He has presented internationally on topics including vocational dreams, Jungian archetypes, and spiritual democracy.
Dr. Herrmann wrote his senior thesis on Meister Eckhart at the University of California at Santa Cruz and he is currently writing a book on Eckhart, Jung, and the Grail Quest.
