A joyful Krishna Janmashtami to my followers! 🪈🪭🦚

Krishna's connection with his so-called "girlfriends," "wives," or "gopis" has always intrigued me and many people I know. This aspect of Krishna's life was something I disliked from childhood until a few years ago, when maturity taught me that beauty (or ugliness) lies in the eyes of the beholder.

I realized that how we interpret Krishna's love for his 16,000 gopis is up to us.
Here’s my interpretation:
Our forefathers wanted to teach us about God's omnipresence. They used the analogy of a lover.

Just as a lover carries a vivid image of their beloved in their heart, a devotee carries an image of their God in their heart.

Just as Krishna could be physically present with all 16,000 gopis at the same time, our beloved God can be with all 8 billion people on Earth simultaneously, as well as with every organism among the 9 million known species.

This is a divine interpretation.

A mundane interpretation might see Krishna's relationships with 16,000 gopis as permission to engage in extramarital affairs or promiscuity.

🌏 In 1960, Juliet Garretson Hollister—a Connecticut housewife and mother—sparked a global movement over a simple peanut-butter sandwich: “What if religious leaders came together to promote peace?” That became her life’s mission.

With no formal theological career available to her, she studied comparative religion at Columbia and Union Seminary, convinced that all faiths share core humane principles.

Her breakthrough came with support from Eleanor Roosevelt, who described her idea as a “spiritual United Nations,” penned letters to Pope John XXIII in Rome, Jawaharlal Nehru in India, Albert Schweitzer in France, U Thant in UN—and opened the doors to global religious solidarity.

Juliet and her son traveled internationally, planting the seeds of what became the Temple of Understanding in 1960—a catalyst for interfaith dialogue, not worship.

Her first major milestone: the 1968 Spiritual Summit in Calcutta, supported by Thomas Merton and Albert Schweitzer—who praised her vision: “The Spirit burns in many flames”.

India took a leading role: from Calcutta to establishing Temple chapters in New Delhi and Varanasi, and partnerships with Indian scholars like Dr Karan Singh—underscoring India’s spiritual leadership.

The US, too, stood at the forefront: New York’s HQ, NGO-US mission ties via the UN ECOSOC, UN General Assembly interfaith services—cemented by continued U.S. and Eleanor Roosevelt’s vision.

Juliet’s early Summits (Calcutta '68, Geneva '70) were convened by a formidable founding circle: Eleanor Roosevelt, Pope John XXIII, U Thant, the Dalai Lama—pioneering pre-UN religious diplomacy.

Her legacy lives on: the Temple remains a leading interfaith NGO, globally active in religious literacy, youth, UN forums—and annually honors changemakers via the Juliet Hollister Awards.

💡 Juliet Hollister showed: one visionary is enough to start a movement. Her model—bold idea + cross-border friendships + grassroots education—continues to guide spiritual peacemaking worldwide.

🇺🇸🇮🇳 The US offered diplomatic clout and Eleanor’s advocacy; India offered spiritual gravitas, religious diversity, and early hosting of global Summits. Together—they sparked the modern interfaith journey.
