When I lived in Florence it became clear to me that the greatest of man's creations were made in pursuit of something greater than oneself.

The Duomo and the cathedrals of Europe are divine inspiration. Man as a celestial being, reaching towards his creator. A tribute to God.

Modern architecture, by contrast, is a tribute to man alone. The efficiency of man as machine. Man as money. Void of of greater meaning.

Across the modern world, this pursuit of something greater feels largely absent. I think it explains much of the coldness felt in modernity. The sense that what we build is useful, but not meaningful.

When building anything - a new fintech, a cityscape, a community - those building must be reaching for something beyond themselves. A moral imperative of some kind. Something that compels those who come after to keep it moving forward. A higher purpose.

The Duomo took 140 years to complete. Nobody who laid the first stone lived to see the dome.

We should all build accordingly.
