I almost didn’t say it.
Friend. Dinner. She held the menu out, then in, then asked me what the specials were. I had watched her do it the last two times. I told her quietly. She went quiet too.
She booked her eye examination the next week. The menu was fine.
Some people are born unable to feel physical pain normally. Congenital insensitivity to pain is a rare condition that can cause serious injuries because affected individuals may not recognise burns, fractures, or other damage.
He thought Butterbean was just an easy payday… 😭💀
Bro came for a paycheck and left with a life lesson. NEVER underestimate your opponent. 🥊🔥

📍 THAT KITCHEN TEASPOON LOOKS HARMLESS
Parents reach for it every day to give syrup to a feverish child.
Yet that same spoon can quietly deliver double or half the intended dose.
Here is the patient-safety truth most homes still ignore… 🧵
The bathroom mirror was steaming up, but the ceiling fan wasn't spinning.
She reached up to steady herself, feeling a wave of nausea crash over her. Within twenty minutes, the entire room smelled faintly of burnt copper, and the right half of her visual world simply vanished.
Not black. Just gone.
Carla sat on the edge of the tub waiting for her sight to come back. When she looked down at her hands, she could only see her left fingers.
She was thirty-two and had lived with typical migraine auras for years. She assumed this was just a weird, painless visual aura that would pass in thirty minutes.
It didn't.
When she finally went to the clinic, the doctor held up fingers on both sides of her face. Carla couldn't see anything to the right of her nose in either eye.
Homonymous hemianopia.
When vision loss cuts off the exact same half of the visual field in both eyes simultaneously, the problem is never in the eyeballs. It’s in the visual processing hub at the very back of the brain, the occipital lobe.
Carla wasn't having an atypical migraine. A small blood clot had starved the visual cortex on the left side of her brain: an acute ischemic occipital stroke.
The copper smell and sudden nausea had been cortical warning signs, completely masked by the absence of traditional stroke symptoms like facial drooping or slurred speech.
She woke up and the bathroom mirror was wrong.
Not blurry. Bent. The doorframe behind her curved in the middle. She closed one eye and it straightened. Opened both and it curved again. She told herself she had slept on her face.
By lunch the curve was still there. She covered the left eye to read her phone. The right eye made every straight line bow. She booked because the lines would not stay still, not because anything hurt.
Chart was 20/25. Not terrible. The macula was not. A small blister of fluid sat under the centre of the right retina. Central serous. Stress, steroids, or nothing obvious. The bend was the fluid. The “slept on it” was the excuse.
Straight lines that curve, especially in one eye, and especially if they straighten when you close that eye, are not sleep. Get it looked at before the fluid sits longer.
@SportyMatterz Tyson could fight anybody back in the day and it would make money. He was enthralling to watch, you just couldn't take your eyes off him, it was always mayhem. He was something else alright, Tyson.
“This harmattan haze has started early this year.”
That was Baba on the veranda. His cousin’s son stood at the gate and waved. Baba squinted, nodded, and once the boy turned the corner he asked who it was. Why people were walking past without greeting.
He blamed the dust. Harmattan in October. The sky was clear. The sun was hot. There was no haze.
He could not tell his own cousin’s son at the gate, so he moved the season forward.
If you are already calling it harmattan in October because you cannot recognise someone at your own gate, the weather is not the problem. Get your eyes checked.
The phone screen was like a blowtorch to his eyeball.
By sunrise, Liam’s right eye was bloodshot and throbbing so violently he threw up in the sink.
He assumed he had pink eye from his gym towel.
The blood test that followed changed his entire life.
Pink eye burns and crusts. What Liam had felt like a hot railroad spike driven behind his pupil. The ache flared worse every time his eye tried to focus on something close.
He didn't have conjunctivitis. He had acute anterior uveitis, severe, sight-threatening inflammation inside the front chamber of his eye.
Under the slit lamp, thousands of white blood cells floated in the clear fluid like a blizzard. His iris was so swollen it was on the verge of scarring permanently to the natural lens behind it.
A single splash of pool water hit her contact lens.
Three days later she was in a dark closet with a towel over her head, sobbing. The light hurt. Urgent care called it a scratched cornea and sent her home with a drop.
It was not a scratch.
She had swum with the lenses in. Water sat under the lens. By the time a specialist saw her, a white ring had formed in the cornea. The pain was out of proportion to how red the eye looked because the organism was along the nerves.
Ordinary drops do not clear it. Treatment is months, not days. The eye was saved. It did not have to get that far.
Pool water, tap water, hot tub. If the lens is in, the water stays out. If the eye is in severe pain and the light is unbearable after water exposure, it is not a simple scratch. Get seen by a professional who can look properly.
