Is College Still About Education… or Has It Become a Marketplace?
The NIL conversation continues to evolve.
But perhaps we’re asking the wrong questions.
Instead of debating how much athletes should earn, maybe we should ask:
What is the purpose of a college scholarship in 2026?
A scholarship was never just about covering tuition.
It was about earning a degree.
Building life skills.
Growing as a person.
Competing at the highest level.
Preparing for a career that lasts long after the final whistle.
Today, however, many recruiting conversations begin—and end—with one number.
How much?
If another school offers more tomorrow…
…does the athlete leave tomorrow?
If that’s the case, are we still talking about college athletics, or are we simply operating a free agency market under a different name?
There is nothing wrong with athletes being compensated. In fact, they deserve to benefit from the value they create.
But we shouldn’t allow compensation to become the only measure of value.
Parents and student-athletes should still be asking:
• Will this university help me graduate?
• Will I be developed as a player?
• Will I become more employable after basketball?
• What happens if the NIL money disappears?
• Will I still be proud to have chosen this school ten years from now?
The best decision isn’t always the biggest offer.
Sometimes it’s the environment that helps an 18-year-old become a successful 30-year-old.
At Sportfolio Group, we believe our responsibility is bigger than negotiating NIL opportunities.
It’s helping young athletes build careers, earn degrees, develop character, and create opportunities that last long after the final game.
Because championships fade.
NIL contracts expire.
A great education, meaningful relationships, and lifelong skills stay with you forever.
The real question isn’t “How much is the offer?”
It’s “Who will I become because I accepted it?”

NIL is creating unprecedented opportunities—but let’s not forget who built the foundation.
Blake Lawrence of Opendorse recently made a compelling point:
“Real NIL deals are the gold of college athletics.”
He’s right.
Schools now have to compensate athletes. Brands don’t. That makes authentic brand partnerships one of the most valuable assets in the NIL ecosystem.
But there’s another conversation we need to have.
Every successful college athlete is the result of years of investment before they ever sign an NIL deal.
Local clubs. High schools. Grassroots programs. Coaches. Trainers. Families. Facilities.
These are the people and organizations that identify talent early, invest thousands of hours, provide opportunities, and often carry significant financial risk—with no guarantee of success.
Yet when the largest financial rewards finally arrive, those early investors are almost always left out.
As NIL and revenue sharing continue to reshape college athletics, perhaps it’s time to think beyond an athlete-only compensation model.
A sustainable ecosystem should reward everyone who creates value.
Imagine a future where a small percentage of major NIL or revenue-sharing income flows back into the development pipeline—supporting the clubs, schools and programs that produced the next generation of athletes.
That wouldn’t take anything away from athletes.
It would strengthen the entire ecosystem, encourage long-term investment in player development, and ensure that grassroots basketball continues to thrive.
The future of college athletics shouldn’t just be about sharing revenue. It should be about sharing success.
At Sportfolio Group, we believe the strongest athlete pathways are built when every stakeholder—from grassroots to college—is aligned and invested in long-term development.
