This is why I rarely trust the opinion of anyone on basketball they never saw. They don’t understand what players and coaches thought before the analytics of the 2010’s.

Players shot 2pt FGA from 1-2 ft from the 3pt basket because:

1. They didn’t have the data showing how many pts per fga they produced from just inside the arc vs from 3pt fga.

2. They believed a shot in rhythm from 1ft inside the arc was better than an out of rhythm 3pt.

3. A gather step wasn’t guaranteed thus step backs were much more difficult

Shot chart data didn’t become available until 1997 and it wasn’t very accurate until maybe the mid 2000’s. And sports were still sticking to traditional practices until the 2010’s when analytics began to be heavily used.
