A lot of Nigerians speak about British rule like it was some era of "competent governance" that we foolishly disrupted. As if the British were these hyper-efficient administrators running a modern state.

They were running an extraction project.

Nigeria was not being "developed", It was being managed at the minimum cost needed to keep resources moving outward and rebellion contained.

That’s why by independence, Nigeria was still massively undereducated, under-industrialised,under-electrified, and structurally dependent.

Whatever infrastructure existed was not built to integrate Nigerian society or improve Nigerian life. It was built to move raw materials to ports and keep colonial control stable. Rail lines, ports, certain roads, administrative buildings. These were not "development", it was logistics to keep a mine functional & the workers productive.

They didn't build roads to keep Nigerians connected to each other, they built routes to connect resources to ships.

Calling that "development" is like calling the conveyor belt in a factory a public transport system.
