Thanks @anydayisnow and @MrsCouture217 for clearing explaining why Florida needs to end debt-based driver’s license suspensions. The current program is only a bandaid helping less than 2 thousand Floridians, while 2 MILLION are suffering. https://t.co/6zC2QK4wuU
Gainesville should do everything possible to ensure as many local residents as possible are able to vote in March’s election, helping fulfill the intent of Amendment 4, my latest editorial for The Sun argues. https://t.co/qbHUZ99hBA

Floridians: Have you had your driver's license suspended because you couldn't afford to pay fines and fees? We want to learn more about your experiences so we can end license suspension for nonpayment in Florida.

@jerryiannelli "It costs $50 to apply for a public defender in Florida, a fee many defendants cannot afford...Florida is the only state in the nation where a judge cannot waive the $50 application fee for a state-appointed lawyer." https://t.co/lGnF8v9pjr
Great, in-depth piece from @jerryiannelli explaining how lack of access to counsel drives criminalization of poverty in Florida. "According to the Fines and Fees Justice Center, more than 71% of license suspensions" were for failure to pay. https://t.co/lGnF8v9pjr
More confusion in Florida: A judge said the state can't prevent 17 people with felonies from registering to vote if they can't pay financial obligations. But a supervisor of election says there's no way for him to figure out if someone can pay or not: https://t.co/MWwsFaR4fd
"[U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle] blocked implementation of the current law until at least April, when he'll conduct a trial on the question of whether the fine and fee payment requirements amount to an unconstitutional poll tax." #Florida#VotingRights https://t.co/flCpf69isO
In Florida, some courts will temporarily waive a 25-40% "collections fee" on overdue fines and fees. @anydayisnow says this reform effort "just scratches the surface" and fails to address the deeper issue of driver's license suspension for nonpayment. https://t.co/lBU26pXMN9
THREAD on today's developments in the case against the Legislature's Amendment 4 law:
I'll let U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle summarize it.
"What we now have is an administrative nightmare."
But the state and Legislature have real constitutional hurdles to overcome as well.
Recap of federal court hearing today in Tallahassee to halt enforcement of SB7066, which places financial barriers on the restoration of voting rights of former felons.
A federal judge in Tallahassee will hear arguments this morning from civil rights groups who argue a new Florida law restricting voting rights for people with felony convictions is unconstitutional. Among other arguments, the groups say the law is effectively a poll tax.
We just filed a brief with the court on the Amendment 4 case. Our release, one-pager and the brief itself is below. We feel it is important that the voices of Returning Citizens and people impacted by the criminal justice system are heard!! #ourvoice

The top officials in charge of voter registration in Florida still have no idea who is eligible to vote and how those people should be able to determine if they are eligible https://t.co/royapNhBs1
