there’s a difference.

unnecessary means the work disappeared.

it didn’t - someone still decides the type scale, the spacing, the palette, the component system.

that work matters more than ever.

unemployable means the price collapsed.

the work exists, but nobody will pay $8k/mo for a human to do what a prompt session handles for $4 in tokens.

here’s what actually happened to each part of the

designer’s job:

→ VISUAL DIRECTION - GONE

three mood boards, two rejected, one survives.

a week of taste-driven exploration that existed because the brief was too vague to decide anything upfront.

a written spec decides it on page one.

there are no directions to reject because there was never a fork in the road.

→ THE DESIGN SYSTEM - AUTOMATED

type ramp, spacing scale, colour, radii, shadows.

40 lines in a tokens file.

every build reads it, every section obeys it, and section eight matches section one without a human checking.

this was the designer’s most valuable output.

it’s now a file that gets generated once.

→ THE FIGMA FILE - SKIPPED

the static mockup that couldn’t scroll, couldn’t click, and needed a handoff ritual to become code.

half the designer’s week was spent in a tool the client never opened.

the client now sees a live site on day three.

not a screenshot with “imagine this scrolls” - the real thing on their phone.

→ REVISIONS - COLLAPSED

“does the hero feel right” was a taste question with no correct answer.

two rounds of subjective back-and-forth that existed because nobody wrote down what “right” meant.

review against a spec takes 20 minutes.

taste never enters the conversation.

→ THE DESIGNER’S REAL SKILL - STILL ALIVE

knowing what makes a layout work, why hierarchy matters, where the eye goes first.

that knowledge didn’t die. it moved into the spec - the 15 minutes where a human decides what the system builds.

the skill survived. the salary didn’t.

THE POINT:

→ the work is worth more than ever
→ the cost of doing it just hit the floor
→ a designer who writes specs is more valuable than one who draws mockups
→ but nobody will pay $8k/mo for mockups when the spec costs 15 minutes

the job didn’t disappear.

the invoice did.
