Downed timber made this trail difficult even for a horse. Cows had to go through a 2-foot gap behind the near trees, then go over a huge log. It was so big that the first cow stopped to scratch her belly on it for a while. Figured nobody would believe us if we didn't video it.

A white bison calf was born at Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge in Iowa on April 30th. Odds about one in a million.

The refuge has run a bison herd since the mid-1990s. All 81 animals trace back to Yellowstone and Wind Cave. In thirty years they had never seen a white one.

To the Lakota, Sioux, and Dakota nations a white bison birth is sacred — a sign of hope.

By May the roads outside the refuge were backed up with cars. People driving from Des Moines just to see it. Refuge manager Scott Gilje said visitor numbers had tripled.

Neal Smith is open every day, from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset.
