What if the single number that best predicts how long you live isn't your cholesterol, your steps, or even your VO2max — but how much power you can produce?
A 2025 Mayo Clinic Proceedings study followed 3,889 adults (46–75) for up to two decades. Those with the lowest muscle power had nearly 6x the risk of death (hazard ratio 5.88) vs those with the highest. Strength? Barely predictive. Not strength. Not cardio. Power.
The trap: power is the first thing aging takes. Your fast-twitch (type II) fibers — the explosive ones — die off faster than any other muscle. Slow cardio and slow lifting barely touch them.
Power is what lets you react, catch a fall, get off the floor. By the time you "feel" weak, you've silently lost decades of it. Anyone over 40 who only walks or lifts slow is losing it right now.
The fix isn't more training. It's faster training — minutes a week, no gym.
5 low-cost rules to keep your power:
1. Skip — 30s, a few times a week
2. Sprint short — 4–6 x 10–20s, near-max
3. Lift with speed — same weight, move it fast
4. Jump — a few low bounds
5. Get off the floor — no hands
You don't need to train more. You need to train fast.

@MensHealthUK Solid — 3 workouts a week is plenty to build muscle after 40.
But most plans build size and skip power. The fast-twitch fibers that keep you explosive fade fastest with age. Add a few sprints or jumps — big AND fast beats just big at 40+.
@jabuelitept Exactly — endless cardio is the slow road. But one thing's missing from the list: sprints.
A few short sprints burn fat like cardio in a fraction of the time — and build the explosive power steps and slow lifting won't touch.
Highest-ROI thing you can add.
@DebbieMaybery Love this — Zone 2 builds the engine.
But endurance isn't what fails you at 75. Power is. Fast-twitch fades first — it's what lets you react, catch a fall, stay independent as you age.
Build the engine, then keep the horsepower.
@MridulDeepanshu@Happysingh2991 True — but "slow it down" undersells it. You can rebuild what's lost, especially the fast-twitch power that goes first. A few minutes of sprints/jumps/skips trains exactly what aging takes. Offense, not just defense.
@PerformanceProt 100%. Both matter.
But one thing sits right in the middle of that Venn: sprinting. It hits the cardio engine (VO2max, metabolic) AND builds the fast-twitch power aging takes first — same 15 min.
Not a replacement. Just the highest-ROI overlap of both.

Follow along. It's time you moved like you're alive. 🇯🇵
Everyone's chasing "anti-aging" now.
Cold plunges. Supplements. Lifting weights.
But let me ask you one thing:
When's the last time you actually SPRINTED — full speed, all out?
Sprinting is one of the most powerful anti-aging tools you have — and the one almost no adult uses.
Not jogging. Not just lifting. Sprinting.
15 minutes. The way kids move.
