He created a projection for maps in the 1500s that would help navigators travel in straight lines over oceans. He didn’t know the extent of the world back then, or that people would use the northern-skewed nature of the projection to favour their politics.
On this day in 1981, Terry Fox died.
His funeral was broadcast nationwide and memorial services were held in hundreds of communities. Flags across the country were lowered to half-mast.

On this day in 1880, O Canada was performed for the first time. It was composed by Calixa Lavallée for the Saint-Jean Baptiste Day ceremony. Later, French-language words were added by Sir Adolphe Basile Routhier. It became Canada's official national anthem in 1980.
