Last night, I sat in this @TayariWestTV#Toochi TV show program with @AKasingye Our topic was youth unemployment. Uganda is sitting on a silent crisis and it’s not just unemployment, it’s what unemployment is doing to our youth. Every year, thousands of young people graduate with hope, ambition, and dreams. But too many of them end up on streets or back at home, not because they are lazy or unqualified, but because the system has not prepared them for real opportunities.
A young person sits at home, day after day, thinking. Questioning. Doubting. The pressure builds. The silence becomes heavy. Mental health begins to decline. And for many, the escape becomes drugs, substance abuse, or complete withdrawal from society.
We are now seeing a generation that is Educated, but unemployed, Skilled on paper, but not empowered in reality. Full of potential, but losing hope. Some are even beginning to regret going to school, not because education is bad, but because it has not translated into livelihoods.
This is not just an economic issue. It is a mental health crisis. As a social worker, this is a social crisis. A ticking time bomb. Informal sector has become risky with trader order policy being implemented in many urban areas.
At Allen Interiors LTD, where we trained and deploy young graduates into the field, we believe the solution lies in practical skilling, entrepreneurship, and mental resilience support. We are working to shift young people from job seekers to job creators, from despair to purpose. We are calling upon local urban councils to partner with youth in informal sector as change makers. Let’s invest in skills that matter. Let’s create opportunities that are real.
Let’s restore hope where it is fading. Presidential skilling hubs doing a good job. Get youth connected to bigger entrepreneurs. Because when you empower a young man, you don’t just change one life, you transform a community. @ManCaveUg
