Here is what actually happened off Sri Lanka, in sequence, with sources attached to every claim.

February 18 to 25, 2026. The IRIS Dena sails into Visakhapatnam, India, for MILAN 2026, one of the world’s largest multilateral naval exercises. 50 nations. Their warships sail together, conduct drills, exchange courtesies. Iran is there. India is there. They are in the same harbor, attending the same ceremony.

February 25. MILAN 2026 ends. IRIS Dena departs India, heading home to Iran.

March 4, 2026. 5:08 AM local time. Distress call. IRIS Dena, 40 nautical miles off Galle on Sri Lanka’s southern coast. A US submarine had put a torpedo through it.

180 crew. 87 bodies recovered. 32 rescued. 61 still missing.

Sri Lanka’s navy went out and pulled people from the water. Sri Lanka’s hospitals treated the survivors.

Now the unverified claims, which matter even as unverified claims.

Multiple reports indicate IRIS Dena had requested authorization to enter Galle port before the attack and was denied for over 11 hours. This is NOT confirmed in Reuters or other Tier 2 sources. No official port authority statement exists in the record. But it is being reported widely enough that it requires acknowledgment and investigation. If true, it changes the legal and humanitarian framing of what happened entirely.

March 5. Sri Lanka’s Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa tells Parliament that a second Iranian vessel named Bushehr is in international waters near Sri Lanka’s maritime border. The government is providing maximum assistance. This is confirmed by the parliamentary statement, reported by multiple outlets. Al Jazeera subsequently reported Iran confirmed Bushehr was moving toward Sri Lanka’s waters.

The third ship. Reports of a third Iranian vessel near India and Sri Lanka are circulating. No maritime tracking data, no official statement, no Tier 2 confirmation exists for a third vessel. It may be a miscount, an AIS ghost, or a real ship operating with transponder off. Currently: unconfirmed.

Here is the picture when you lay it flat.

Three Iranian warships departed India after a multilateral naval exercise attended by 50 nations. One was sunk by a US submarine in international waters while potentially waiting for port entry authorization. A second is now under Sri Lankan government assistance in or near Sri Lanka’s waters. A third may or may not exist.

The US conducted a torpedo attack on a military vessel in the Indian Ocean, the first confirmed submarine kill of an enemy warship since World War II, in waters that 50 nations’ navies had shared peacefully 8 days earlier.

Sri Lanka, a country still rebuilding from the worst economic collapse in its modern history, is now the humanitarian custodian of the aftermath of a US naval strike, being watched simultaneously by Washington, Beijing, New Delhi, and Tehran, with no correct answer available and no way to stay neutral.

The timeline says this started at a naval exercise meant to build multilateral trust.
