I know a lot are looking at Atleti as a bit of a meltdown moment after their outbursts on social media yesterday I am going to try to provide context based on my time in Spain.

While it did come across very fan account it also highlights a way Atleti are able to defend themselves in the modern age.

I think plenty of people understand the power the big two clubs hold but don't understand the true extent of it in the Spanish media, they have whole media publications that will essentially push the clubs narrative as the more access inside the club the journalist has the better in terms of getting exclusives.

There are a lot of great journalists in Spain and many I admire but also some who essentially are clients and spokespeople for the big two.

Atleti while now are the third power if you watch Spanish TV or read Spanish media get little coverage and the coverage they do get is primarily based around Diego Simeone that was something that shocked me when I first moved to Spain as after six or seven years of success I expected them to get a lot more focus.

We've seen countless examples of pressure for a player to sign via the media in Spain Nico Williams just as one example last season and I am also not absolving Julian of guilt in this as his side have clearly been pushing for the move as well.

Also all clubs to an extent brief the media to try to help push through their agenda but the sway the big two have due to their size is off the scale.

This is more about providing the context as to why Atleti have gone nuclear and made this so public not a criticism of the big two before fans come at me.

As a club you've got to use the power you have and both have enormous power to dictate the media agenda
