Are men truly polygamous in nature?
The claim that men are naturally polygamous is often overstated. While biology may suggest that men can reproduce with multiple partners an idea discussed in Evolutionary Psychology this does not mean men are inherently or inevitably polygamous. Humans are also wired for emotional bonding, long-term commitment, and cooperation, which support monogamous relationships.
From an Islamic perspective, polygyny is permitted but not unconditional. The Qur’an allows a man to marry up to four wives only if he can deal justly with them; otherwise, he is advised to marry just one (Qur’an 4:3). Scholars emphasize that justice here includes emotional, financial, and social fairness standards that are difficult to maintain. Another verse (Qur’an 4:129) acknowledges the challenge of equal treatment, reinforcing caution rather than encouragement.
The life of Prophet Muhammad also provides context: his first marriage to Khadijah bint Khuwaylid was monogamous for about 25 years. His later marriages occurred in specific social and political contexts, not as a general prescription for all men.
In practice, many Muslim societies today are largely monogamous due to economic realities and the difficulty of fulfilling the conditions required for polygyny. This aligns with the broader understanding that while men may have the capacity for multiple partners, their actual relationship choices are shaped by faith, responsibility, and personal values.
Islam does not present men as inherently polygamous; rather, it permits polygyny under strict ethical conditions.
Men are Polygamous
Women are Jealous
One of my grandfathers, Baba Debisi whom we lost on November 19, 2024 once told me a story about why he didn’t marry a lady he was introduced to.
He was a skilled carpenter, well respected for his craft. The lady, named Mistura, was introduced to him by her brother, who had complained that no suitors had shown interest in her. She was from Ile Sakosi in Offa.
After completing a carpentry job in nearby Osogbo, Baba Debisi returned to Offa and decided to follow up on the introduction.
He sat in the sitting room with her brother, waiting. Shortly after, Mistura came in from the backyard with water for the guests. As tradition demands, she knelt to greet them, placed the water on the wooden table, and quietly left.
Then he said something that surprised me.
Word for word, Baba Debisi said he couldn’t marry her because she was taller than him.
According to him, even while kneeling, her height was almost the same as his. Standing beside him would make it even more obvious. That was enough for him the idea of marriage ended there.
As a prince with pride, he moved on and later married Iya Latifa of Ile Saba, who, like him, had lost her parents at a young age.
Personally, I feel the same way I wouldn’t marry a lady taller than me, just like my grandpa.

AI can handle 1,000 tasks in seconds, yet I need 3 business days to reply “noted”
But here’s the lesson: speed isn’t d problem—systems are. AI is fast bcuz it’s structured and intentional.
If u want results, stop relying on mood. Build systems, use tools, and move with purpose.
