Today I received this beautiful edition that Crossway (or Desiring God?) graciously gifted me. I can’t remember why. Perhaps a celebration of his 80th. I do know they asked nothing in return.

Well, I will give something in return—namely, honor.

In a day when it’s increasingly fashionable to dunk on our fathers, I simply want to say “thank you” to God for John Piper and the impact his ministry has had on my life.

The lens he gave me was my Wizard of Oz moment where a black and white vision of Christianity burst forth with bright color. The reality that God is more committed to our joy than we are. That holiness and happiness are synonyms. The good dent this left is truly incalculable.

Of course, there are differences. He's not your guy for political theology. But one of the things even he taught me is that all our heroes have feet of clay.

And so it is.

Truthfully, if Christ uses me to bring about even 1/10,000th of the kingdom impact Piper has had, I will feel as if I’d done something.
