Indian Film Festival 2025 Kicks Off in Sri Lanka with the Screening of “83”
The Indian Film Festival 2025, a week-long celebration of Indian cinema, began with its inauguration ceremony at PVR Colombo on January 6, 2025. The festival opened with the screening of the critically acclaimed film 83, which tells the inspiring story of India’s first Cricket World Cup victory in 1983—a moment that transformed Indian cricket.
Adding to the significance of the evening, January 6 also marked the birthday of Kapil Dev, the legendary captain who led India to its historic World Cup triumph in 1983.
Strengthening Cultural Ties
High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka, H.E. Santosh Jha, highlighted the significance of the festival in bringing the people of the two nations closer together. “Through today’s screening of 83, we celebrate the story of India’s first World Cup victory, a defining moment in Indian cricket. This festival is also an important step in strengthening the cultural connection between India and Sri Lanka, bringing people closer together,” he said.
Prof. Ankuran Dutta, Director of the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre, shared his excitement about the festival. “We organize week-long film festivals in different parts of Sri Lanka, and today marks the inauguration ceremony and the screening of the movie 83,” he said.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Sri Lankan government officials and special guests, including Sri Lanka’s 1996 Cricket World Cup-winning captain, Mr. Arjuna Ranatunga.
The Indian Film Festival 2025, organized by the High Commission of India in Colombo in collaboration with the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre, will run until January 10, 2025. It will feature a curated selection of Indian films spanning genres such as drama, romance, action, and historical epics, showcasing the diversity and vibrancy of Indian cinema.
In addition to Colombo, the festival will bring screenings to various cities, including Kandy, Hambantota, Jaffna, Badulla, Galle, Kurunegala, Matale, Matara, and Nuwara Eliya.
