I find it really interesting how every adaption of Carrie basically woobyfies her into baby who gets abused - When King is rather explicit in the novel that it’s not initially the period in the shower thing that makes everyone hate her - But that Carrie herself is a religious fanatic and is yelling at all the girls that their going to hell for dressing like sluts and sheit, with King even making it explicit that she kinda acts rude and didn’t even ‘really’ try to ever befriend anyone.

If you want to avoid making her fat, and you don't want to make her annoyingly religious, and you're not gonna do the trans thing because it's too cool, you have to make Carrie a Liz Lemon style mumbly mean nerd who makes everyone uncomfortable with her relentless cruel jabs

@DiscussingFilm The problem with “Carrie” films is that they never really depict Carrie as a child who is targeted because she looks different from the others. She is bullied so bad and isn’t defended by anyone because she is ugly- not because she is a “pretty girl” who is just an outcast

Realistically Carrie sitting in the middle of the other popular girls on her first day in real school, sweetly telling them she made her dress herself, would get immediately adopted into their circle and protected as someone who doesn’t know any better. In the books, Carrie is bullied not just for being an overweight outcast, but because she is also a religious fanatic who tells the other kids that they’re all going to hell. She doesn’t make much of an effort to be their friend either, being described as suspicious and rude. If you make Carrie a sweet baby angel who can do no wrong, it really flattens the antagonists here (her bullies) into evil (and unconvincing) stereotypes. Which is…. Fine but not as compelling as the source material
