Dinesh Thakur Ayurveda

Why Fund Journalists? Why fund journalists at all?
Dinesh Thakur says serious investigative reporting takes time, documents, RTIs, appeals, travel and verification—and many investigations may still end without a publishable story.

Watch Roundtable Studio’s latest podcast with Dinesh Thakur—former Ranbaxy executive, whistleblower and Founder of the Thakur Family Foundation.
He responds to questions around journalist funding, FCRA, media trial and Arnab Goswami’s “EXPOSE.”
Republic TV’s “Thakur Foundation exposé” deserves scrutiny — not merely for what it says, but for the extraordinary editorial scale it has chosen to give to roughly $2 million in grants spread over several years.
Let us first put the number in perspective.
India receives roughly ₹18,000–23,000 crore annually in foreign contributions under FCRA. In 2024–25 alone, about 16,200 associations reportedly received around ₹22,963 crore.
Against this enormous annual flow, the Thakur Family Foundation’s publicly documented grants amount to roughly $2 million — around ₹18 crore — spread across multiple years and recipients.
These were not secret suitcases of cash. The grants appear in public US tax filings. They largely supported journalists, researchers and organisations working on public-health issues: drug regulation, clinical trials, vaccine approval processes, pharmaceutical accountability and weaknesses in India’s health-regulatory system.
One may legitimately examine every grant. Ask who received it, what conditions were attached, whether conflicts of interest were disclosed, and whether the resulting journalism was independent.
That is journalism.
But turning ₹18 crore spread across years into a breathless primetime narrative about foreign forces allegedly financing an entire ideological media ecosystem is something else. It is editorial theatre.
And this is where Republic TV’s editorial judgment itself becomes the story.
If foreign funding of organisations capable of influencing public discourse is inherently suspicious, why isn’t the same investigative energy directed towards the much larger universe of FCRA recipients?
RSS/Sangh-associated social organisations, including bodies connected with Seva Bharati, Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram and the Ekal ecosystem, have also operated through organisations receiving foreign contributions. Does Republic devote primetime investigations to mapping their donors, ideological affiliations and possible influence?
More importantly, foreign money is only one form of institutional influence.
Consider domestic corporate money.
An investigation reported that ONGC alone channelled more than ₹668 crore in CSR funding over roughly a decade to around 20 organisations described as Sangh-linked.
₹668 crore from ONE PSU ecosystem versus roughly ₹18 crore of Thakur Foundation grants spread over several years.
Where are the flashing graphics?
Where are the dramatic countdowns?
Where is the investigation into whether hundreds of crores flowing from a government-controlled corporate entity to organisations associated with the ideological ecosystem of the ruling establishment could create questions of patronage or influence?
And then comes the elephant sitting inside the television studio itself: government money and Indian television news.
The Indian television industry operates on a vastly larger financial scale. Governments and government-controlled institutions spend substantial public money on advertising and publicity. Much of Indian television’s political ecosystem has simultaneously become strikingly sympathetic to the government.
That does not automatically prove that advertising buys favourable coverage.
But surely it raises at least as legitimate an editorial question as an American foundation funding investigations into drug regulation.
If ₹18 crore distributed over several years can justify a primetime investigation into possible influence over journalism, shouldn’t hundreds or thousands of crores flowing through government advertising, PSU advertising, sponsorships and other state-linked channels deserve even greater scrutiny?
Who funds whom?
How much?
And does the money correlate with editorial behaviour?
Those would be fascinating questions for Republic TV to investigate.
Instead, a comparatively tiny and publicly disclosed pool of grants for health journalism is inflated into something resembling a national conspiracy.
That is why the issue is no longer simply the Thakur Family Foundation.
The issue is Republic TV’s editorial selection.
Journalism is not defined only by whether individual facts in a programme are technically correct. Journalism is also about proportion, context and consistency.
You can create a deeply misleading picture without publishing a single fabricated number simply by magnifying one ₹18-crore story while keeping ₹668 crore — and much larger financial ecosystems — outside the camera frame.
That is the oldest trick in propaganda: selection masquerading as investigation.
If Republic genuinely believes that money can compromise public discourse, excellent. Let us apply that principle universally.
Investigate foreign-funded liberal organisations.
Investigate foreign-funded conservative and Sangh organisations.
Investigate corporate funding.
Investigate PSU CSR.
Investigate government advertising.
Investigate the financial relationship between governments and television networks.
And disclose the financial dependencies of the media organisations doing the investigating.
Then we have journalism.
But if $2 million spent over several years on health-related investigative work becomes a primetime “foreign influence” spectacle while financial flows many times larger towards ideologically convenient institutions attract little comparable scrutiny, the programme begins to look less like accountability journalism and more like narrative management dressed up as an exposé.
Transparency cannot be selective.
Neither can outrage.
And journalism certainly shouldn’t be.
