First of all, thank you to everyone who shared my previous post.
The responses helped me realize that I was far from the only victim. I had suspected that there might be other people affected, but I never imagined there would be so many. Likewise, I never expected the situation to receive this much attention.
I do not plan to pin this post, but because this commission involved a very large amount of money, I feel it is important to provide an update. From what I have seen so far, I may have lost more money than any of the other victims who have come forward.
Many people have also pointed out that this artist’s work was never worth such a high price. Looking back on it now, I unfortunately have to agree.
As shown in the screenshots, the artist did respond to me after I made my post public. However, I want to make it clear that this does not mean the matter has been resolved. A response alone is not a resolution.
What I would really like to emphasize is that both commissioners and artists should be careful when dealing with commissions.
As someone from Hong Kong, I have worked with many artists from Mainland China and other places. I have also seen situations where commissioners received completed artwork and then refused to pay the remaining balance. Because of that, I always tried to act in good faith. In most cases, unless an artist had their own payment policy, I was willing to pay the full amount upfront from the very beginning.
I chose to do so because I respect artists and their work. I believe artists deserve to be paid fairly, and I wanted to show that trust.
Unfortunately, this experience has seriously damaged that trust.
For the first time, I find myself no longer comfortable paying artists in full before receiving completed work. Going forward, I will most likely only use a 50/50 payment structure or another arrangement that offers protection to both parties.
This is not because I no longer respect artists. Rather, it is because I have learned, through an expensive lesson, that trust should be earned and protected on both sides.
I still hope this situation can eventually be resolved properly. Until then, I believe it is important to keep people informed and encourage both artists and commissioners to take reasonable precautions in future transactions.
I rarely make posts like this, but this situation has left me both frustrated and deeply concerned.
This artist scammed me out of $490 USD.
To explain what happened: I commissioned them in September of last year. The artwork reached roughly 70% completion before they suddenly disappeared without any warning. I repeatedly tried to contact them to ask what had happened, but received no response whatsoever.
For approximately six months, from around January of this year until now, I heard absolutely nothing. I originally gave them until May to resolve the situation. During that time, I continued checking their activity and noticed that their X account was also inactive, which led me to believe that perhaps they were dealing with personal issues or some kind of emergency.
However, after May passed, they recently became active again and started posting updates. At that point, I gradually realized that they had likely not been absent due to any serious emergency.
What makes this situation worse is that I had already paid the full commission amount in advance through installment payments before the artwork was completed. They simply disappeared with my money and provided no communication, no explanation, and no updates. No matter how many times I attempted to reach out, I received no response.
I would like to use this opportunity to warn others: unless you are dealing with an artist you know and trust very well, please be cautious about paying the full amount upfront for a first-time commission. Art commissions are unfortunately one of the easiest areas for scams to occur, and I would not be making this post if I felt I had any other reasonable option.
Below, I will provide screenshots of our conversations, proof of payment, and images of the unfinished commission.
I also strongly advise others not to commission this artist.
At this point, this public warning is the only action I feel able to take. I currently do not intend to pursue legal action or seek legal assistance.
Until this commission is completed or otherwise properly resolved, I will not delete this post.
