This week in Dissection Co-curricular, the girls met Dr. Mandy, who taught them the art of suturing a wound. Great care was taken with the sharp needles and the pig trotters were left in an impressively neat state for healing. #StSwithunsBiology
U6 biologists took part in the dissection of sheep kidneys, to learn more about the structure and function of the different tissues involved in excretion.
M5 biologists’ practiced their confidence and risk taking skills, learning about the anatomy of the mammalian digestive system first-hand by dissecting a rat. They were amazed by how long the small intestine is relative to body size, and the large size of the rat’s caecum.
L5 biologists carried out a dissection of a lamb’s heart to learn about the structure and function of a mammalian heart and associated blood vessels. The pupils found it very interesting and were amazed by the complexity of the 3-dimensional structure.
The 2023 Biology Bake off was held this week as part of the Royal Society of Biology Week. There was an amazing array of highly original, creative and biologically accurate bakes, including: the human brain, skin, lungs, mouth, eyeballs and a very realistic biology laboratory.
L5 biologist had an amazing day of field work at Studland Bay! Learning about the adaptations of marram grass, heather and insectivorous sundews. #leesonhouse#itswhoweare#L5pupils
“Mango” the biology department rescue Yemen chameleon was the star of the open day! With Mr Yates and Mr Hansen, showing the visitors how to hold him. #itswhoweare#chameleon#openday
The biology department welcomed visitors to the open day with an array of fascinating activities! Classifying organisms, testing patients’ “urine” for diabetes, dissecting a rat and holding “Mango”! #itswhoweare#stswithunsbiology#openday#chameleon#dissection
“Mango" the biology department rescue Yemen chameleon shows his stealth to catch singing crickets, with his hydrostatically controlled tongue that is attached to the front of his jaw and can extend up to 3 times his own body length.
