The talented and knowledgeable David Rickman reconstructed these warriors first attested in 1689, until the early 19thc, in a series of drawings, showing how even the legs were protected under horse armor. Not included are their thick buff coat with neckguard and helmets.
i don't love Amy Acton, but her victory is now one of the things I'm most looking forward to on election night
beyond even my own ideological biases towards Democrats winning, seeing someone as personally disgusting as Vivek Ramaswamy lose his chance for power will be euphoric
A lot of dystopiaslop (Hunger Games, Black Mirror, whatever we’re seeing here) assumes the market for the Watch The Poor Suffer show is the rich rather than the slightly-less-poor, but the rich prefer to entertain each other.
Interestingly, The Long Walk got this right.
Hard to overstate how much the Amy Acton Mom ad is what the modern GOP is about. All these anxieties about how people (especially women and children) might use their agency to break bonds of filial duty and free themselves, rather than be subject to control and abuse.
We sort of satirize them as the “you can’t groom my kids, that’s MY job!” Party, but this ad is very nearly that explicit argument. They don’t want schools to empower young people to find the autonomy to come out as gay or trans, they don’t want colleges to teach young adults about the breadth of the world and the human dignity of people from diverse backgrounds, they don’t want women to have financial independence and jobs and no-fault divorce.
At the heart of the GOP is this very straightforward premise: “there are some people whom it is my right to abuse. They are my property, and they owe me total obedience; freeing themselves from my abuse is a betrayal of natural hierarchy and divine law. You are trying to take my victims away from me, and I’ll do anything to stop you.”
this might be the biggest planned backfire in modern american politics? like differently from off-the-cuff comments or whatever this was planned and god it is VILE
Japan fumbled one (1) student protest movement 50 years ago and have been subservient to the LDP ever since. All the horror stories about Japanese police are from that era. High conviction rates, forced confessions, detention tortures...
Fake Japanese account: "This is what diversity looks like. We must never let this reach Japan"
Real Japanese account: "Koreans claim to be civilized yet if we look at the 1936 Boat Incident you may see differently" [Blurriest black and white photo you've ever seen]
@ThatchEffendi Besides the ever incredible William Dafoe, David Bowie’s portrayal of Pontius is fantastic for the short time he’s on screen. Calculating and hard, but also with a subtle touch of sympathy towards Jesus.
