A3: I think taking the time in the beginning of the year to truly get to know your students and their needs, likes, dislikes will help you in the long run. Also taking the time to develop a sense of classroom community.

A2: I try to take the first 5 minutes of workshops each day to do this. The kids understand I am “working” and not available for conferencing. It helps to establish this right away.

A5: I think classroom libraries are a little easier to organize and care for in the lower grades. Our aides are wonderful at helping out when needed with them. I looked at mine recently and it is in need of refreshing so hoping to use my Scholastic points.

Q4: Again, the kids that need the books in hands the most often don’t get them because they don’t return a book the entire year. I wonder if that’s an area we could look to for change. Maybe a reproducible book for them as an option...

A3: The book drive was great... I hope it reached all the readers we needed it to reach. Not sure if this would reach the intended readers but my kids visited their school library every Wednesday this summer for activities and open library. They loved it!

@cwherrmann As a parent I’m not a fan of the logs. It turns enjoyable reading into an assignment in our house, particularly with my more reluctant reader. I would prefer he finds a book to engage in that he doesn’t want to put down!

A1: I think that’s an amazing idea. Kids have very diverse interests. I know some kids that will connect more with books offered by the special areas. Also I think it’s just another opportunity to get books in hands of kids.
