When are on the brink of change, we get fearful because we are familiar with what we will lose, but can't imagine what we can gain.

My dear friend, Robin Reiser, wrote a heartfelt piece on empty nesting that is currently featured prominently above the fold on the front page of @Salon !!

If you're a fan of Jane Eyre, you're likely to enjoy this modern retelling of the story.

How feeling envy helped me in life — mostly - The Washington Post - If that wasn't enough, my father was a professor of Christian ethics and a minister, and so I knew envy was a vice. On top of everything else, I ... - https://t.co/nKKMUPBCkF
Dr. Robert Leahy was quoted in the Washington Post's recently published article on envy. He discusses how to utilize envy as an instrument for positive change and find meaning in your life.

Is envy always a bad thing? Or can it be harnessed towards constructive ends? This is the topic of a recent article by @StacySKim

When harnessed, envy can propel you to incredible heights.
I’ve seen it first hand watching my wife @StacySKim write. She’s been studying envy and is writing a book on this much-feared emotion.
Check out her perspective here. So proud of her! https://t.co/5ixFjZLfEF
High-achievers want happiness, success or work-life balance. But, those can make you feel dissatisfied, depleted or resentful.
Instead, aim for SUSTAINABLE GRATIFICATION.
"Sustainable" is durable yet supportable & ethical.
"Gratification" is pleasing yet giving & thankful.
"Attunement is about understanding your child’s moods and feelings and truly knowing and valuing your child for who they are, not who you want them to be."
Great advice from @MCCHarvardEd. Thank you.
It’s also a chance for tiny comforts like Ginger Lemon Honey tea. Here is my recipe: Make a cup of ginger tea with 1 bag (I like Yogi). When done steeping, remove the tea bag and squeeze half a lemon adding its juice and pulp. Fish out any seeds. Add honey to taste. Cheers!
With so many people under the weather this is a good time to remember what real self-care is.
When you are not feeling well, it isn’t foregoing a chance to show how tough you are. It is the set of choices you make to for your well-being.
This wonderful young lady is a legacy of...Northwestern.
4 years ago, I couldn't imagine rooting for MICHIGAN in anything. But my daughter opted to go to the @UMich. So it's "Go Blue" tonite for this @NorthwesternU grad.
Why I'm glad things turned out differently:
She can carve her own path
• Make new friends
• Discover her university
• Earn her own $ - in the cafeteria and as a TA
She must learn how to navigate "the system" at a huge public university
• Housing - on and off campus
• Fighting for spots in classes and clubs
• Completing prerequisites at community colleges
She's creating her own memories
• Finding favorite restaurants
• Learning Michigan traditions (whatever they are)
• Competing for a National Championship in football
She's not constrained by our experience
• Where we lived
• What we did during college
• Our visiting and wanting to do things together
She genuinely believes Michigan is the "Best University in the World"
There's something about the "Michigan confidence" that is annoying, yet admirable.
I was disappointed when she decided attend somewhere other than Northwestern. Our younger daughter will not go to Northwestern either. And that's ok.
My biggest parenting joy is seeing how each chapter unfolds for my girls.
Go Blue!

I've gone through some tough times during my 55 years, but I've also had many good people in my life. As of now, here are the most important lessons I've learned:
(in no particular order)
* Baby steps are far better than leaps not taken.
* Don't plan too far into the future.
* Listening is a gift.
* The words we use set the stage and the stories we tell ourselves direct our lives.
* Everyone wants to be acknowledged and appreciated for what they do and loved and accepted for who they are.
