PISA 2024 tables are out and England has risen internationally.

The thing about education is that it takes several years to see good policy impact. By the time results kick in, the politicians who did a good job have long gone and the new ones in their place often take for granted the gains made.

Congrats to @michaelgove and @NickGibbUK for the fight they won on phonics, knowledge, discipline, exams and much more. It came at personal cost for them both. But they can look at England and know their reforms transformed and will transform the lives of millions of children - not just in England - but for all those who look to England to learn from us (let’s hope Scotland and Wales catch on soon).

Let’s also hope that our new Education Secretary @LucyMPowell is mature and sensible enough to learn from those who came before her and who achieved great things. Perhaps she might ask for their advice or follow in their footsteps?

New PISA data out- and a huge success story. England is now a top-10 education system in the world. Outside of Asia, one of the highest.

New PISA 2025 results:

Science: 8th in the world, up from 13th
Reading: 9th, up from 13th
Maths: 10th, up from 11th.
While much of the OECD has gone backwards, England has has held its ground while most of the world has gone backwards. Huge achievement by school staff.

Would be a great idea if this could be done on a larger scale. We could collect rainwater in purpose-built infrastructure when it rains (most of the year in Britain), reserving it for use in summer, when water usage is highest. Has anyone looked into this?

The biggest lie we tell in education is that things are ‘too academic’.

They need approx 20% on Maths GCSE to get a BASIC PASS.

30% of kids don’t manage this.

This is the reason why we can never reform healthcare in the UK — or even have a sensible debate about it.
The moment anyone suggests alternative/additional ways of funding health Labour rushes out privatisation smears and claims US private health insurance is being proposed.
Labour has been doing it for decades. It explains why the NHS is effectively beyond reform.
The two worst health systems in the rich world are in America and the UK. It’s why nobody has ever copied them. It would be mad to go from ours to theirs (or vice versa).
But Europe is awash with health systems that can call on several sources of funds, including many with compulsory public health insurance schemes. They have better health outcomes than the NHS. They are free at the point of use (like the NHS). Most of them are better funded.
But Labour puts them out of bounds, refuses even to discuss or consider. So patient care suffers. NHS struggles on.
Labour is always telling us we need to get closer to Europe. It’s where we belong. But not when it comes to health, where it insists no lessons can be learned. Pretty pathetic, really.
