In the ancient world, salt was so valuable that Roman soldiers (soldier – ‘sal dare’, meaning to give salt) were sometimes paid with salt instead of money. A monthly salt allowance was a salarium, providing origination for both the French word salaire, and the English language word salary.

When salt first appeared on the market, it circulated in its economic capacity for a long time before its consumption, and this is why the ancient salt mines at Provadia-Solnitsata are regarded as the first mint in ancient Europe, and a major focal point of long-distance trade. Courtesy of a fantastic discovery during the shortened 2020 excavation season, it is also the site of an artifact that may attest to a very unusual diety, a Salt God.

The prehistoric complex Provadia-Solnitsata is located near the modern city of Provadia, Bulgaria. It represents the remains of the oldest salt production center in Europe (5500-4200 BC), which became the first prehistoric urban center on our continent (4700-4300 BC). It consists of a Neolithic-Chalcolithic production complex, as well as an initially non-fortified and then fortified stone wall (3 meters high and 2 meters wide, considered atypical for the Chalcolithic in the area) Chalcolithic complex (citadel) with a Thracian tumulus superimposed.

A Late Chalcolithic ritualistic sacrificial pit along with an adjacent necropolis, occupied during Middle to Late Chalcolithic periods covers an area of ​​about 300 acres. The emergence and development of the complex are directly related to its location on top of the largest and in fact the only deposit of rock salt in the Eastern Balkans- the Mirov salt field. This brief description of the archaeological site is based on 15 years of fieldwork (2005-2020) and defines it as one of the most significant prehistoric sites in Southeastern Europe.
