Today's run: the temperature was around 0 C and the streets were mostly bare with patches of ice. I ran without ice cleats. It was raining and and slow going as patches of ice covered sections of street or were underwater (ankle deep) with metre high snow banks on either side.
I am fascinated with a new (to me) genre of fantasy/SF known as LitRPG. The novelist uses the conventions of Role Playing games. I am not a fan of computer games (I was a Unix Sysadmin), but LitRPG captures my interest. Like Stoker's Dracula using telegraph & dictaphone formats.
@sieverst @potatoslav I have been going to the Munich station every few years since 1976 and it has always been under construction of some sort. I am assuming that renovation was put into some budget line and became one of those bureaucratic traditions that cannot be changed.
@ColinSlark@PGCitizen Exactly what I intended. When I was hiring for UNBC I used to pick up candidates from the airport and make a bet with myself about who would turn down an offer or deliberately throw the interview based upon their comments about the weather on the drive to the hotel.
@GrammarTable It seems to me that those who selected cassava assume that context trumps convention when interpreting language. This is a correct attitude when dealing with 2nd language speakers (or instruction manuals), but not when training writers.
A cold weather conundrum:
1. It is -18 this morning.
2. I must drive the kid to uni for 8:30 am class
3. Shops do not open until 9:00am
4. I do not want to make a 2nd trip out in this
5. What to do between 8:15 & 9 when it is too cold to leave the car.
@KateTranslate Upper Canadian weather? <grin> It's -8 this morning here and I damn near froze my fingers off yesterday standing in a snowdrift while taking the battery out of the car that I am mothballing for the winter. (Kid refuses to get a driver's license, but we are keeping it in hope)
Our front door has tiny, ornate, patterns of glass rather than a clear pane. Winters, I shove my face close to the glass and peer out of one of the holes in the pattern to see how much snow has fallen while I slept. When I was a child I had to scrape frost to look out.
Karin and I finished watching Sanctuary: A Witch's Tale last night. It was not as engaging as Domino Day. Both are fantasy serialized TV shows. They are both Urban Fantasy focusing on witches in an otherwise realistic contemporary setting, but Sanctuary was like Broadchurch, S2
@seeshespeak I don't remember getting any over 25 years of teaching & 10 as English Dept. chair. I worked at a small Uni, but in Canada so there may be a cultural difference.
@weiss_hadas My favourite question is, "Name someone who might use your book as required reading in a course." (That is, condemn a friend or colleague to a merciless spam campaign.)
This little dog loves to race about in the snow, but the people eating breakfast behind that glass door are just too interesting. Merlin in the morning. My morning music is Aaron Copland 'cause sometimes you need a fanfare before the Rodeo starts.
