Instead, in six days, Israel effectively tripled its area of control. Military historians still struggle to fully account for it.

The Israel Defense Forces has reached a historic milestone: a female soldier has successfully completed the gruelling 18-month training course required for integration into Sayeret Matkal - Israel's most elite special operations unit, often compared to Britain's own SAS.
The pilot programme, launched in December 2024, was designed to examine expanding women's service in combat units, including special operations. The soldier met all required criteria and completed the dedicated training course successfully.
Today, we stand with all those across the United Kingdom grieving the loss of three Royal Navy personnel.
The freedoms, security and democratic values we cherish are safeguarded by men and women willing to serve something greater than themselves. We honour their sacrifice and send our heartfelt condolences to those they leave behind.
Today in 1982, Israel's Ambassador to the UK was shot outside the Dorchester Hotel in London.
The attack was ordered by Iraqi intelligence and carried out by the Abu Nidal Organisation - a deliberate provocation designed to draw Israel into a war in Lebanon that would destabilise Syria, Iraq's rival.
Israel, which had faced years of cross-border attacks from militant bases in southern Lebanon, invaded three days later.
Argov never recovered. He died in 2003.
