@JamesKelly@staylorish I'm sure those who'd happily see an independent Scotland back in the EU would be delighted to see England back in the EU too - hardly a Brexiteer argument, is it?
@JanetMcwee @TracyEPaterson @RoddyQC My grandfather was Estonian and was passionate about restoring the country's independence. Don't think anybody would have objected to his "nationalism".
Yet "nationalism" is used as a smear when referring to independence supporting Scots. There's a definite conflation.
@JanetMcwee @TracyEPaterson @RoddyQC Still talking about nationalism, one definition of which is "advocacy of or support for the political independence of a particular nation or people".
Seems to me that one can hold this view without adhering to the definition you provided.
It's a loaded word.
@JanetMcwee @TracyEPaterson @RoddyQC I'm often not sure exactly what people are referring to when they mention nationalism. It's a loaded word and definitions are often conflated.
@JanetMcwee @TracyEPaterson @RoddyQC So what if someone supports political independence for their country but detests all that "my country's better than all the rest" rubbish? Are they nationalists?
@ChrisMcEleny Nationalist as in thinking one's country is better than all the rest, or nationalist in the sense of wanting political independence for your country?
I don't like the word because I'm the latter but not the former. It's annoying that both definitions are deliberately conflated.
@themajorityscot Got any arguments other than deliberately conflating differing meanings of the word nationalist?
It's possible to want political independence for a country without buying into all that "my country's better than all the rest".
You ought to know that.
@DanNeidle Would that not also necessitate a change to the Optional Remuneration Arrangements (OpRA) rules?
Many folk enter pension salary sacrifice arrangements and obtain that relief tax that way due to pension contributions being exempted.
@VerdiMurray Folk who are okay with this have taken leave of their senses. All for some woolly notion of "gender" which I'm yet to see a definition of beyond crass stereotypes.
@DeanMThomson@BBCScotlandNews Taking money from those not quite as poor as the poorest in society is not taking from the rich.
This is austerity continued.
@iris_frs Well thankfully the trigger for such "attempted deadly force" appears to be quite extreme i.e. multiple assaults on several armed police officers, including breaking the nose of one of them.
I think we can all sleep easy on this one.
