Aside from their burial ground, build a small place of remembrance wherever you are.

It could be a small garden… a tree planted in their name… a quiet corner in your home… or a little space where their names continue to breathe.

Our ancestors understood this.

This was once part of how many of our ancestors understood remembrance, until colonialism and foreign religions taught generations of Africans to fear many ancestral practices.

Our practices were demonized.

People once created spaces where the memory of those who came before them remained present.

In Vietnam, ancestor altars remain an important feature of many homes.

Japan has the butsudan… a household Buddhist altar commonly associated with remembering deceased family members.

Korea has jesa… memorial rites performed for ancestors.

Different forms of ancestral remembrance remain among Chinese communities across Singapore and Southeast Asia, and across parts of Latin America.

A grave marks where someone was laid to rest... A place of remembrance marks where their memory continues to live.

Many of you buried your parents in places you cannot easily travel to whenever you want to give them their flowers, remember them, pour libation or simply sit quietly with their memory.

Give the next generation something physical that connects them to their roots and people who came before them.
