Per Picard production designer @DaveBlass, welcome to the fleet USS RESNIK. Named for Judith Resnik, NASA astronaut (recruited by Nichelle Nichols) who flew on Discovery and perished in the Challenger disaster. Resnik was the first Jewish woman in space. #StarTrek
Latest episode of one of my favourite pods, @JudaismUnbound, has some terrific discussion of Trek in the last 15 mins. And an all around fascinating discussion of conversion and identity throughout. Take a listen: https://t.co/aCwvJtfTnz
@EoMProject Moral of the story - don't expect a vessel in a museum to look like it did in the era where it became famous / historically important. Because after such time, it likely continued to have a life as a working machine that's adapted and refit over time.
@EoMProject In WWII, my grandfather flew C-47 Dakotas for the RCAF, including one now in the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum. Of course, all its tech is 1970s-era, not WWII. Because after the war, Canada kept flying it for 30+ years. (Pics by my dad and grandfather, from the same plane)
No spoilers, but I am completely gripped by the suspense and character drama of #StarTrekPicard season 3. Really excellent television, and recommend even for those who may have skipped seasons 1 and 2
@DaveBlass@CandaceKita I know my response seems vague and frustrating. The actual rules are vague and frustrating! It is a choppy waters that all of us in the world of commentary and review navigate perilously.
@DaveBlass@CandaceKita YouTube is really its own environment - the starting point is copyright rules, but layered onto that is their terms of use, and with it their system of strikes, demonetization, etc. But even they don’t strictly define the amount or duration (likely so people can’t game it)
@DaveBlass@CandaceKita Context: is the use transformative? Is the amount of it being used ‘substantial’? What is the likely impact of my use on the commercial success of the original work? Am I using this clip for its own sake, or only because the listener needs to know something it for my discussion?
@DaveBlass@CandaceKita The very short answer is that there isn’t a bright line, and there isn’t a ‘safe harbour’ amount - you really have to think about the whole context of fair use every time you use a clip.
@saysjessbess @lisabrowndraws This book is so wonderful, we used to buy it for all our friends’ kids, but it’s very hard to find now. I think there would be huge demand for it. It is really something special
I will keep doing this until it’s on the shelves… @lemonysnicket, @DanielHandler and @mcsweeneys
My kids (and I) adore ‘The Latke Who Couldn’t Stop Screaming’ — this book needs a reprint!
Let this be my semi-annual nudge to @lemonysnicket, @DanielHandler and @mcsweeneys that 'The Latke Who Couldn't Stop Screaming' is an absolute gem but very hard to find, so please consider republishing it!
