When a 4PB HPC scratch storage system keeps reaching 99% capacity, you need more than good intentions—you need intelligent automation and a solution researchers can trust.

The Research Technology Office at Arizona State University (ASU) faced a critical challenge: their high-speed scratch storage was being used by researchers as permanent storage, pushing utilization to 99% and triggering system crashes. Despite a 90-day retention policy, nothing was ever deleted.

ASU’s Senior HPC Systems Analyst Josh Burks successfully leveraged Starfish, their existing data management platform, to build a targeted, automated, and directory-level enforcement workflow. By focusing on inactive directories and adopting an "archive first, delete later" strategy, they achieved phenomenal results:

3 PB of data freed in the first few months without any critical loss.
Scratch storage utilization ultimately stabilized at ~70%, eliminating system instability.
Researchers trust their data will not be deleted and can be easily recovered
Usage of approved archived storage repositories is way up

This approach is a sustainable model for any HPC center struggling with overloaded scratch systems.
