IGN has published a full interview with Rockstar's Rob Nelson, revealing some pretty exciting new information about GTA 6, while giving more information on stuff we already knew.
Here are all the highlights:
- Story missions are being made less restrictive when possible. Some missions have multiple escape routes, while police chases and robberies can transition into the same systemic gameplay used in free roam.
- The safehouses in GTA 6 are now much closer to RDR2's camps, Jason/Lucia will have their own daily schedule while at home and interact like real people
- Rockstar still wants tightly directed cinematic sequences where necessary, so missions won't become completely sandbox-style.
- One of Rockstar's major goals is to blur the line between scripted missions and free-roam gameplay.
- Rockstar says emergent free-roam sequences can now look and feel almost like scripted missions, especially when Jason and Lucia work together during robberies and escapes.
- Jason can cut his hair/beard shorter at home as well, just like Arthur could at camp. He can only make it shorter at home, if you want to change the hairstyle OR make it longer, you will have to go to a barber. I think this heavily implies that beard/hair growth is 100% returning from RDR2 but its not restricted as the hair stylist and you can make it magically longer like in older GTA games if you want to.
- GTA VI is designed around living in the world, not just completing missions. Rockstar says players should be able to simply wander around as Jason or Lucia, interact with people, discover activities, make money, and experience emergent events.
- Rob describes GTA 6's map as its largest, deepest, most densely populated and complex world
- You can freely switch between Jason and Lucia during much of free roam, including when they are hanging out at their safehouse. Although story moments can temporarily restrict switching. The character you're not controlling continues living their own routine rather than simply waiting
- You can text and call the other protagonist. Ignoring messages can even have a small negative effect on the relationship
- When together, Jason and Lucia actively protect each other. If one gets into a confrontation, the other can intervene. During escapes, your partner can also drive while you shoot at pursuing enemies or police.
- The RDR2 NPC interaction system returns in a much more advanced form. You can talk to people, listen to conversations and interact naturally. Rockstar created additional writing/directing resources specifically to generate the huge quantity of ambient dialogue. It seems like Greet/Antagonize is a lot more in-depth now.
- Combat encounters have more levels of escalation. You can threaten someone into backing down, knock them out, incapacitate them without killing them, or kill them. Rockstar wants players to have more control over how violent situations become
- Rockstar explicitly describes the new design of the Wanted system as encouraging a "hit-and-run" criminal playstyle which means you commit the crime, escape quickly and avoid unnecessarily escalating the situation.
- Different salons have exclusive hairstyles, giving players another reason to explore different parts of the map.
Clothing stores also have location-specific items, rather than every store necessarily having exactly the same inventory.
- Jason and Lucia can go to the gym together, allowing you to level up both characters' physical stats at the same time
- Personal vehicles can be called over similarly to GTA Online, purchased weapons are stored in the trunk alongside spare outfits (similar to RDR2)
- Animal studying returns from RDR2. We saw this in the extended look briefly but yes, Wildlife can be studied as a collection mechanic and to learn additional information without needing to hunt animals. If I had to guess, the compendium is probably back too
- Focus mode works similarly to RDR2's Eagle Eye and can highlight useful things in the environment, including police.
- Snapmatic/social media returns. Jason and Lucia can follow accounts and browse social media, but apparently cannot post because they're fugitives.
- Roads are narrower and built at a more realistic scale, while traffic density is higher. Rockstar says this makes driving more difficult and skill-dependent. We did notice this in the gameplay looks we've had so far, really glad to have it confirmed fully
- Many discoveries will not be marked with map icons or objectives. Players are expected to find events naturally by exploring.
- The game can spontaneously redirect you toward activities. In the demo, Jason noticed a nearby police impound lot and suggested stealing a car there even though the player had been heading somewhere else.
- Rockstar specifically wants players to slow down and explore instead of racing from mission to mission.
- Despite the more realistic systems and relationship mechanics, Rockstar stresses that players can still create the classic chaotic GTA experience and get into huge shootouts and police chases whenever they want.
I really enjoyed this interview a ton and I highly recommend you guys read it too, they were playing the game while speaking to Rob Nelson so it helps paint a lot more of an accurate picture of how the game works rather than the more smaller articles we've had so far.
GTA 6 sounds absolutely amazing and a real evolution of all the best ideas from Red Dead 2 and previous GTA games. Can't believe we'll be playing this next month!

GTA 6: LOVE Magazine just dropped the details I actually wanted.
Not another feature list. Jason, Lucia, Raul, the NPCs, and how Rockstar built Leonida.
Jason isn’t a statement about the Army. His circumstances push him toward drug trafficking and bank robbery, with the player still having some influence over those choices.
Lucia is chasing a better life. She has an immigrant background and was raised around Newark, near Liberty City. Rockstar says the bar for her character is Arthur Morgan and Niko Bellic, without turning her into either.
Jason and Lucia are supposed to push and pull each other. Two young criminals on the run, hopeful and naive enough to keep pushing their spree further.
Then there’s Raul. An older criminal who knows Vice City’s underworld and becomes their mentor as the jobs get bigger.
But the part I really love is Rockstar’s approach to the world. There is no background.
The radio, ads, pedestrian conversations and random stories happening around you are all part of the writing operation. Rockstar wants Leonida to feel like a place that exists even when you aren’t looking at it. Every NPC is made to feel like main characters.
The satire isn’t just copying whatever is viral that week either. It’s about culture, conspiracies, wealth, poverty, excess and the ridiculous ways people react to all of it.
Rockstar even travelled through Miami, the towns, the Keys and Key West with small teams before returning with larger groups, talking to locals, cops and gang members and using those experiences to build Leonida.
Aaron Garbut called some of the stories they encountered terrifying.
That’s the stuff I want to hear about. Not just how big GTA 6 is.
Why Leonida might be the kind of world you can disappear into for hundreds of hours. Rockstar wants you to get lost in Leonida and the characters.
NEW GTA 6 DETAILS REVEALED:
- Rockstar calls GTA 6 its “deepest and most immersive” game yet, with a new approach to nearly everything it has done before.
- Development starts with extensive real-world research. A small Rockstar team travelled through Miami, nearby towns and the Florida Keys to Key West.
- Rockstar later returned with larger teams, recording locations while studying the people, culture and environments they wanted to recreate.
- Aaron Garbut and Rockstar art directors spent a day filming Florida from a helicopter over the Everglades, mangrove inlets, Downtown Miami and the beach.
- Rockstar met locals, police and gang members to understand different sides of Florida and Leonida.
- Miami’s contrasts inspired the game, including wealth, poverty, excess, hustle and how openly people show everything off.
- Clothing, hairstyles, cosmetics and styling were heavily researched so Leonida’s characters feel authentic to where they come from.
- GTA 6’s satire draws from things Rockstar found interesting, including conspiracy theories and the strange ways people react to everyday events.
- Since development has lasted years, Rockstar avoids chasing short-lived internet trends, instead exaggerating ideas that can still feel relevant at release.
- Rockstar wants Vice City and Leonida to feel like somewhere players can spend hundreds of hours and genuinely get attached to.
- GTA 6 continues exploring the American Dream, but Rockstar says it’s now more modest: owning a home, supporting a family and paying off debts instead of becoming wildly successful.
- Jason’s criminal life is partly driven by his material circumstances. Rockstar mentions drug trafficking and bank robbery, but how much he embraces that lifestyle is shaped by the player.
- Lucia wants a better life and refuses to let obstacles stop her from getting it.
- Jason and Lucia were written to complement each other, with a push-and-pull dynamic throughout the story.
- Rockstar wanted both to feel vulnerable, flawed and capable of being right or wrong, rather than permanently “badass.”
- Lucia was partly inspired by one Rockstar writer’s experience growing up around strong women in New Jersey and New York.
- Jason and Lucia were intended to feel young, hopeful and inexperienced rather than hardened career criminals.
- Rockstar describes going on the run and pushing a crime spree to its limit as having something “hopeful and naive” about it.
- Raul was created as an older, experienced figure who introduces Jason and Lucia to larger-scale heists and criminal set pieces.
- Raul represents a more specifically Miami side of the criminal world, bringing local knowledge Jason and Lucia don’t initially have in Vice City.
- Ambrosia was inspired partly by Clewiston and the Lake Okeechobee area.
- National politics are not a major GTA 6 focus. Election signs, robocalls and radio shows will exist, but Rockstar avoids tying the game too closely to one real-world politician or event.
- Rockstar’s satire takes a real issue, finds its most interesting part, then exaggerates it until the ridiculousness becomes obvious.
- GTA 6 has a dedicated pedestrian dialogue team in Los Angeles, plus advertising and comedy writers across LA, New York and London.
- Rockstar says there are no real “background” NPCs. If you stop and listen to someone, their conversation is designed to hold up instead of being random background noise.
- Hundreds of conversations can be heard in busy areas, each designed to remain believable if the player stops to listen.
- Rockstar describes every NPC as effectively the main character of their own story rather than just an “extra.”
- GTA 6’s writing system is extremely technical, requiring many writers to create the hundreds of voices that make Leonida feel alive.
- New LOVE magazine screenshots show Jason and Lucia at a pool table, plus a new Leonida street scene with dirt bikes, cars and large painted columns.

GTA 6 Countdown: 46 days to go! 🌴
• Preloading begins in 39 days
• Additional Miami marketing begins in 11 days
• LOVE Magazine featuring #GTAVI launches TOMORROW!
@iGrandTheftAuto I’m not surprised by this statement from this guy at all. What’s even better is Dan Vávra — he criticizes everything he didn’t create himself, while what he has created doesn’t even come close to what foreign studios produce. Envy is a bitch.
NEW GTA 6 WORLD DETAILS:
- Players can hear snippets from potentially hundreds of different conversations while moving through busy areas
- The world features fictional political campaigns, robocalls, radio commercials and political talk shows
- Rockstar says there is effectively no “background” in GTA 6, with parts of the world designed to withstand the player’s attention when they choose to focus on them
- Conspiracy theories and strange public reactions to everyday events inspired parts of GTA 6’s writing
- GTA 6’s world is designed to push reality further through satire, making it larger than life and more grotesque
- Leonida’s radio will feature satire surrounding modern “culture wars”
- Ambrosia is inspired by the real Florida areas of Clewiston and Lake Okeechobee
(Via: LOVE Magazine)
Ambrosia is Rockstar's fictional sugar town, based on Clewiston and Lake Okeechobee.
You can spot a sign that says Vote Erin Henshaw, sponsored by Allied Crystals, hear a campaign robocall, catch a radio ad, or tune into a political talk show that's working itself into a state.
None of it is a direct copy of anything real, but it all feels familiar in that classic uncanny GTA way.

James Horton, GTA 6's Writing Director of Open World, spoke to LOVE Magazine for Issue 27 #GTAVI
He talks about the game's satire, the culture wars playing out across Leonida's radio, and making the city feel overheard rather than scripted.
Horton says it should wash over you as you sprint down the busiest street, “hearing snatches of a hundred different conversations as you go.”
“In a way, there is no ‘background’ in this game. There's just foreground you're not paying attention to right now.”
