ao3 has been under a lot of pressure lately. more users, more traffic, more reports, more confusion. which is great in one way because fandom is alive and people want stories, but it also means we all need to breathe and remember how the site actually works.
this is for everyone. old readers, new readers, writers, lurkers, people who just discovered fanfiction last week, and people who have been here since dial up.
let us talk about how to exist peacefully on ao3.
“Autry is pleased to announce the appointment of South Korean singer, songwriter, and producer Changbin, of the K-pop group @Stray_Kids, as the brand's first ever Global Brand Ambassador.”
WE ARE FINALLY SEEING THE LIGHT CONGRATULATIONS CHANGBIN
"he's so performative" "he's doing it cuz there's cameras" Chan has always been and will always be the most kindest caring person ever. he will never be the bad guy miserable people want him to be LEAVE HIM ALONE
to the people saying they removed the keyring kit because it wouldn’t compensate the members for production: what are your opinions on the cost and rollout of the STAY 3rd Generation Fankit?
good! now i don’t wanna hear nothing from NOBODY talking about “i can’t boycott bc it’s sabotaging their careers”. here’s said artist TELLING you all you gotta do is listen to the music, you don’t gotta pay for nothing
The message is clear: complain, and there will be retaliation. Taking away the plushie and the music is cruel, and pretending that you listened to us by lowering the price of the kit instead of the membership while claiming you take responsibility, is just insulting.
Stays : hey jype the prices are unreasonable could you lower it & fix the price
🤡- oh u don’t want the replay album? ok
Stay : I said the price of the membership-
🤡- and fuck your stay representative plushie
Stay - the price -
seungmin -🤦🏻
ok let me get this straight:
-membership prices went up 50%+. fans were outraged. we were very clear about what the problem was.
- div1 responds by saying they “reflected on prices.”
- but: membership price stays exactly the same.
and instead the kit gets a bit cheaper, but the membership still has to be bought separately, so the actual thing people were mad about does not change. plushie option gone. fewer options. less value.
so basically:
- the problem people pointed out was left untouched
- something else got changed... and that change strips value in a way that conveniently offsets any potential revenue loss.
- all of this was presented as “listening” to the fanbase.
come the fuck on. this is a pretty standard corporate tactic. you don’t fix the core issue. you tweak an adjacent product and call it a response so on paper you can say you acted but in practice, nothing meaningful changes
the predictable result is fans negotiating against themselves, accepting fewer options and less value as a compromise they never asked for. we’re already seeing this as the discourse shifts on threads and here too. and the fact that it works says everything.
of course, saying you reflected on prices while delivering a worse overall option is insane. but it’s effective. why? because over time, it teaches fans that giving feedback is pointless, the outcome will always be a downgrade framed as concession.
if the complaint was about the membership price, then reflecting on feedback means addressing the membership price. anything else is patronizing the fandom, the same top-down disrespect shown toward their own artists. and ultimately... it shows exactly how little we’re valued beyond our usefulness as profit generators.
shame on you, div1.
