Some might ask - why do you defend Hamas fighters?
The answer is a very long and personal story. I will try to summarize it here.
Exactly 22 years ago in October 2001, the Al-Qassam Brigades carried out its very first operation in an occupation settlement. My brother Ibrahim was on this mission.
A few days before the operation, Ibrahim and my father Sheikh Nizar Rayan had visited a photo exhibition of the Intifada martyrs murdered by the Zionist occupation. As expected from the usual high death toll among children in Zionist raids against Palestinians, photos of child martyrs were the most prominent.
When Ibrahim saw the picture of an infant martyr Iman Hajo, he was moved until his eyes welled up. He said in outrage, “If God enables me to fight Zionists, I will not have mercy on either adults or children.”
My father immediately replied, “As for children, it [killing them] is forbidden. It is a crime.”
Seventeen-year-old Ibrahim and his 19-year-old comrade Abdullah set off and clashed with the Zionists army for six hours. They were eventually surrounded by Commando teams and helicopters, so they took refuge in a house in the settlement.
There, they found a woman and her children. They did not harm any of them. They fought the Zionist soldiers away from them, following the commands of the Prophet Muhammed PBUH and the instructions of my father.
Seven years after the operation, Zionists assassinated my father. F-16 planes bombed our house, killing all women and children from my family who were in the house. Eleven children, the youngest of whom was an infant. They killed every child sibling of my brother Ibrahim.
According to the views and rules of the First World, my brother Ibrahim is a terrorist and the pilot who dropped the bomb on my child siblings is acting in self-defense.
Today, the president of the country that manufactures F-16s and sends them to our killers is trying to distort the reality of the path that Ibrahim and his comrades have taken. They falsely accuse them and stigmatize them with the most despicable attribute of Zionists – killing children.
Therefore, to do justice to Ibrahim and his oppressed, heroic comrades, we need to expose the lies and keep talking about them and their legacy.
