the most famous cut pokemon that almost existed.
back in 1996, while gamefreak was developing the original red and green, they had already planned a full three stage evolution line for pikachu.
the developers created a third evolution internally known as gorochu (index number 175). it was designed as a much more aggressive, thunder god-inspired final form based on the japanese deity raijin. instead of the cute mouse aesthetic, gorochu featured bared fangs, massive curved horns, and a bulkier, more intimidating body meant to represent the rumbling sound “gorogoro.”
however, right before release, the gameboy’s strict 512 kilobyte cartridge limit forced difficult cuts. pikachu had already become the unofficial mascot, and gamefreak decided that a three-stage line for a non-starter pokemon was a luxury they couldn’t afford. gorochu was removed in the final weeks of development.
even though it never made it into the game, traces remained. in the japanese versions, an npc on cinnabar island mentions trading a pokemon that then evolves. when the game was localized into english, the trade was changed to involve a raichu instead of the original pokemon, creating one of the most confusing lines in red and blue for decades.
data miners and beta leaks later confirmed that gorochu’s sprite data, name, and some early battle animations still exist in the game’s code.
