Lieutenant General Schmundt considered Colonel Count Stauffenberg to be very capable and therefore had him flown out of Africa wounded. At the instigation of Tresckow (leading head of the military resistance), he was transferred to the staff of the reserve army with Schmundt's help. This was the only way he could later take part in the briefing at the Führer's headquarters on July 20, 1944. At the situation meeting on July 20, 1944, Schmundt (7) was directly in front of the bomb. Schmundt lost his left eye and suffered burns and severe injuries from splinters to both legs. On July 25, Hitler visited his confidant in the Carlshof military hospital near Rastenburg and promoted him to General of the Infantry. By the end of September 1944, however, Schmundt's health deteriorated rapidly. On October 1, 1944, he died in Carlshof. After his death Hitler called him his 'best man'.
According to military historians, Schmundt was a convinced National Socialist, worst Anti-Semite and unconditionally devoted to Hitler. (Karma?)
