Let me try and explain what growing an economy in simple terms is. I bought a business in Victoria, it is a small Micro loft 320 Sq ft , overlooking the inner harbour. It was zoned to be able to rent out as a short term rental. I paid my property taxes, license fees . It was a thriving business, supplementing my retirement income. I hired a manager to look after it and was responsible for the bookings and running the business. She in turn hired cleaners and maintenance people. I paid GST and provincial taxes. Tourists from all over the world came and stayed in our unit. We recommend all kinds of activities for them to enjoy, in fact we arranged with local businesses discounts for our guests.
Then one day without any warning, the Provincial Government took our rights away, apparently because a housing and affordable rentals shortage . What the government didn’t take into account, these units were too small for families or even couples to rent over a long period. I business suffered and suddenly we were unable to rent our unit
The government demonized us, saying that we were greedy landlords, that was the furthest from the truth, all we were trying to do was supplement our income as we are retired.
So when the government uses phrases as “ we are the engine for the economy. This is such nonsense.

B.C. Ferries only has one owner: the Government of British Columbia.

A Government led by David Eby and the NDP. The NDP have stacked the B.C. Ferries Board with their political friends (none of whom with significant maritime experience). The NDP control the Board and they control the direction of this company. Taxpayers also provide massive subsidies - an amount determined by the NDP Government.

The Chinese Government Ferries contract was Eby’s decision and he’s failed the workers of this province.

The COV councillors explicitly asked the Province of BC to make them illegal. 634 legal vacation rentals by owners in the downtown core were wiped out and everyone has lost because of it. Tourism is down, Hotel Prices are for the rich only. And mom and pop owners lost their investments

The City of Victoria pulled a very suspect move when they first encouraged legal tourism zoned, licensed vacation rentals by owners in new condos being built in the downtown core, so that they could rejuvenate down and out neighbourhoods. Then once the neighbourhoods were thriving....

All the foot traffic lost, all the families visiting and keeping the downtown businesses busy is now gone. The wiping out of the legally tourism zoned condos in the downtown core by the @CityOfVictoria and @KahlonRav was a huge mistake. The shortsightedness of councillors & Kahlon was driven by the @bchotelassoc telling them to scapegoat STR's to win political points. @myDVBA We have been trying to get this reversed in court for the last two years.

@BCGovNews This has done nothing to make housing more affordable! All it’s done is destroy small businesses and make it completely undesirable for anyone to invest in this province. Why would someone take that risk, when the government can change the rules with the stroke of a pen.

In stark contrast to the waffle house that was discussed to be built at the corner of Pandora and Gov… is 2014.

Over ten years ago council had the foresight to build a zoning that breathed life into old town Victoria. Mixed use zoning is economically viable, hotels aren’t?

The Janion never had a problem meeting old town aesthetics or today’s OCP to be economically viable. Neither did the other 1/2 dozen builds in old town Victoria; I hope this mistake of zoning removal will be realized.

@HomesForLiving_ @mattdellok Housing crisis. Maybe try turning off your tv and walking downtown to see all the empty condo units. Also, how is a hotel with 12 floors going to solve this “housing crisis”.

@mattdellok Desperate need for hotels lol….you were very supportive in shutting down locally owned legal short term rentals, did you forget that? These STR’s paid the city a significant amount in tax dollars and provided a boost to the local economy. A new council can’t come soon enough.

We call on @Dave_Eby to put his words into real action and restore the legally zoned and operating short term rentals he stoled from hardworking BC people. You devastated middle class people trying to get ahead, ruined pension plans. And you did so at the urging of the @bchotelassoc who wrote your legislation against mom and pop owners. @bcndp DO THE RIGHT THING. Stand united with your own people.
