The United States Mission to Belgium condemns, in the strongest terms, Ghent University’s retaliation against an American scholar following his accurate whistleblower reporting on academic fraud.

The United States government regularly funds and supports research, academic exchanges, and other engagements with overseas universities. Dishonest, corrupt institutions that engage in, or reward, scapegoating mob behavior are not desirable partners for us. This is particularly true where the purpose and effect of the scapegoating is to punish accurate journalism unearthing academic dishonesty. We are therefore reviewing any relationships we have with Ghent University.

Bad-faith idealogues will try to make this a referendum on the content of Cofnas’s scholarship – or polemical distortions of it. That’s wrong. Free speech means that controversial views are protected. And Cofnas’s views were known to Ghent University when he was hired.

The ultimate purpose of freedom of speech is to overturn lies, fraud, and false ideologies. This is precisely what Cofnas was doing, and precisely the reason his home institution wants to silence him.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

@JosMaes1 @tscheldt Ge moet u focussen op het positieve. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink (uit de mond van Alexander De Croo, te pas en ten onpas gebruikt). Als native English speaker errgerr ik me daar mateloos aan. Het positieve: VRT = altijd amusement. Ook VTM.

@tscheldt En wa gaddegij daar aan gaan doen? "Stijgt" is voortaan "gaat omhoog", "daalt" wordt "gaat omlaag" (gezien, niet toevallig, ook op de VRT). Wie zich daaraan ergert is oud. Beter: wie zich daaraan gaat ergeren is oud. Voor elk werkwoord "gaan" of "gaat" plaatsen. Ge komt er wel.

@moenaert En wa gaddegij daaraan doen? ;) We zijn zwaar gezakt voor het vak "Algemeen Nederlands", en we hebben de VRT en consoorten te danken. Plaats nu voor elk werkwoord het woordje "gaan" en je bent VRT-keur. Ik krijg er de kriebels van en kijk alleen nog voor mijn amusement. :(

@RaiSmallbones @Patleysen @moenaert Iemands taal toont zijn ontwikkelingsniveau. Taal leeft, akkoord, maar door voor elk werkwoord het woordje "gaan" te plaatsen smoor je de taal. Op TV gezien "de [vul maar in] gaat omhoog". Wat is er verkeerd aan het woord "stijgt" dan? Of "daalt" is nu "... gaat omlaag". Zielig.
