Quarterfinals Botanical University Challenge #BUC2025 held this week. All 31 teams can bask in their great performances. Aberdeen, Reading, Eden Project and Plymouth teams have to look forward to semifinals in August. Fern knowledge was a question this week; what is its name?
I managed to picture a meteor!
(I was picturing the Plough / the Big Dipper (that’s why it’s in the centre), and a meteor appeared as I pressed the shutter!)

Graham Bathe drew my attention to the mutual exclusively of wild garlic and bluebell patches in ancient woodland. This is in Gopher Wood, Wiltshire; does it indicate chemical traces of earlier land use? The wood sits on top of prehistoric field systems and settlement
Sowed a wildflower meadow, planted a native species rich hedgerow of 20+ species, early flowering bulb border to provide nectar for wildlife when food is scarce in early spring, and now digging a wildlife pond!
